Your Guide To Los Angeles Bicycle Culture
In case you didn't notice the price of gas has gotten a little bit out of control. While you could resort to expletives when it costs you $50 to fill up your '98 Honda Civic, you're better off getting even rather than mad. And what's the best way to get even? Ditching your car, and getting on your bike, of course! So here are some ways to help you immerse yourself in bike culture.
If you’re looking to make friends with some fellow biking Angelenos, consider joining a Critical Mass bike ride. Once a month dozens and dozens of bicycle enthusiasts come together and take over the streets of LA. This link sends you to the site for Santa Monica’s Critical Mass, but rides take place all over the world.
P.S. If you’re interested in other types of Critical Mass type activities check out the Midnight Ridazz Bicycle Ride or South Bay Cruisers.
Take a peak to see what all the fuss is about.
This might be one of the coolest places in LA. It’s a non profit educational organization run by volunteers who just love to bike. They don’t sell bikes or fix them for you, but they will teach you how to work on your own bike (they don’t charge any money, but there’s a suggested donation of a few bucks.) It’s kind of like that saying about teaching a man to fish, huh?
P.S. The Bicycle Oven on Figueroa and the Bikerowave on Berkeley Street in Santa Monica function in a similar manner. Plus, the Bikerowave has bi-weekly movie nights!!
Straight and to the point.
If you don’t have a bike, but want to explore the wide world of breaks and gears, then rent one! If you’re interesting in biking down the South Bay Bike Trail, here are a number of places you can rent bikes in Santa Monica. If you’re looking to stay inland, Hollywood Pro Bicycles also rents cycles.
If you’re looking for ways to get in touch with your local biking community and mass rides aren’t your style, check out Bike Boom for biking events in the LA and OC areas.
We all know that biking is awesome for the environment. But do you want to know what’s even more awesome? Buying a used bike, and then biking! Reusing is one of THE BEST ways you can help out Mother Nature, so start checking out those used cycles.
Is that a mime with rabbit ears? Just wondering…
If you’re not ready to brave the sometimes crazy streets of LA, get your bearings on one of LA’s bike paths. If you’re looking for beach scenery there’s Ballona Creek or Venice Beach, but if you’re tired of sharing the road with Rollerbladers, consider biking on a mountain trail or alongside the LA River.
Sometimes things aren’t always in your control. LA drivers are notorious for multitasking while they drive, so there’s always the chance someone’s eating a sandwich or picking their nose instead of watching the road. Just in case you have the misfortune to encounter one of these doofuses, here’s where to find some legal advice.
Reasons to love your bicycle.
There are TONS of shops around Los Angeles where you can buy a bicycle. REI, Helen’s, Performance, and Cynergy are just a small handful of places where you can check out bikes. I Martin has a pretty awesome selection of racing and mountain bikes, but that’s just our personal opinion! Your best bet is to research bikes online before heading out to one of LA’s many shops.

If you’re not planning on taking your bike into the mountains or racing it down highways, then a cruiser might be a good choice for you. They’re wide and usually pretty sturdy, which might be beneficial if it’s been a while since you’ve been behind the handlebars. Plus, you can get a basket fixed to the front of your cruiser so you can tote your puppy or your groceries on your ride.
