Viva La’ Mexico – Eat the very best Mexican Food in Tempe
Living in the great and spanning Sonoran Desert that is Arizona, most of us residents very quickly become affluent with the large Mexican and Hispanic population. That being said, Arizona has some damn good Mexican food. In fact, being so close to Mexico, we are one of those states that have some of the best Mexican food you could ever hope to eat. So get out those chili peppers, ready your mouth for some fiery spices and get ready to dive into a burrito platter! Viva La Mexico baby—in beautiful Tempe, Arizona!
This restaurant is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Tempe, and I will happily tell you why. While you may not think that this place has very much to offer, due to the fact that is very deceiving from the outside, looks can be deceiving. What you will find once you enter this little Mexican eatery is plenty of great service, a wash of culture and of course great chips and salsa at your table while you wait for your main entrée to come back from the kitchen.
Their menu is decadent in all things Mexican. They serve all the varieties of the traditional dishes and then spice up the menu with a few signature dishes of their own. If you are looking for amazingly great service, authentic and delicious, gourmet Mexican food, and all at prices that are well within reach, LA Fonda is calling your name my friend. And be prepared, the portions are very large. Viva La Fonda!

Rosita's Fine Mexican Food
I love this place, simply put. A homely and very authentic, culturally decadent and lavishly decorated interior greets hungry patrons. Excellent customer service that exemplifies the very ambience of what a great restaurant should be. Their prices are moderate, depending upon just what you end up ordering. But it’s the taste of the food, the authenticity and of course, they have some of tastiest, homemade flour tortillas and chips you will ever eat.
Plenty of items decorate their lavish menu, and they will happily custom make orders to perfection. Even if you do not have time to sit and dine, simply call ahead and order out. This place is great for the traveler who just wants to order food to-go and eat it in their hotel room. Great prices, amazing service and some the best Mexican food in state all compliment an awesome restaurant.

Los Sombreros Cafe & Cantina
This very homely restaurant looks like a wooden lodge from the exterior and sits directly on the Scottsdale/Tempe border. But what you will find inside is amazing service, excellent cooking and a well-priced, gourmet menu adorned with some very old-school and home-styled Mexican recipes.
Due to the immense popularity surrounding this place I would not recommend eating here on the weekends. I had to wait an hour last time I made the mistake of venturing out here on a Friday night. However, for weekday Mexican dining at its finest, head to the Tempe/Scottsdale border and dig in!

This cool little restaurant specializes in the best damn burrito that you will ever eat. While they also serve plenty of other famous Mexican eats, your best bet here is to go with one of their signature and whopping-huge burritos. No questions asked. This place has got some of the best wrapped Mexican eats in Tempe. Oh yeah, you can eat here for under ten bucks!

This place has been around for quite some time. While you may have to wait to get a seat during the weekends, when they are most crowded, it will be time well worth waiting, once you get an order of the delicious Mexican fare that they have to offer. There is a good reason why this eatery has been around so long, their recipes are as authentic as they get and their prices are fantastically low.

This is a smaller and very authentic Mexican food restaurant that has plenty to offer the weary and hungry stroller of the popular South Tempe markets. All you have to do is stop on in and you will be offered a table in a relatively short amount of time. Then order the great eats from their fairly large menu and dig in. Watch out, the plates are hot and the servings are very large.

Manuel's Mexican Restaurant
Manuel's Mexican Restaurant

When you come to Manuel’s, you are in for a real Mexican treat. The restaurant is decorated to feel like you are in Mexico City, and it really does give off this sort of an authentic ambience. The feeling aside, it’s the food that really counts. One thing I must note out of sheer disappointment is the fact that their North Scottsdale location boasts a hip and hopping piano bar, and their Tempe location does not. But that aside it’s still a great place to eat.
Their menu is adorned with plenty of eats and a few great combination platters for those of you who can never make up their minds on just what you want to eat (me). They serve all the great beers and their rice and beans are some of the best I have ever had. They are moderately priced and two people can dine here for less than thirty bucks. Not too shabby, and the food you get is served in very large portions, so there will be plenty to take home later and reheat.
While small, this place is really kick butt. They have some of the best burritos in all of the state. Their Carne Asada steak is amazing as well. The service is usually good, but I have had mixed experiences here. Still the food keeps tempting my tongue and my brain, and once in a while I find myself sitting at table here in this smaller, yet homely establishment and digging into chips while I wait for a steak. Great food, okay service and damn decent prices await you at Armando’s.
