Getting up the gumption to sit down and plan for my friend’s baby shower, which I would be hosting in just a few months time, was proving to be quite the challenge; especially faced with a small budget (darned economy…sigh) and a fairly large guest list.
Alas, the clock was ticking, and invites needed to go out… soon. So, I forced myself to sit down, with pen and paper in hand, to make my list and financial plan. Things were going along pretty well – until I came to the décor. As I am not a big fan of the cliché baby shower decorations (i.e. baby booties, bottles, or the other typical fare), I generally rely on fresh flowers, in abundance. However, with money constraints and the large invite list, I knew that this would be where I would have to cut back
I decided to stop in at one of my favorite floral shops, Capelli Floral, to survey the goods and ask for their expertise. I am always confident that they will give me the biggest “bang for my buck” and lead me to make good choices. As I walked in, I was instantly struck by that wonderful, fresh-flower aroma and stood there, mesmerized, by the flora. Finally, after a few moments, I roused myself from my fragrance induced stupor and became acutely aware of my surroundings: the high ceilings, the stained concrete floors and the open space… Instantly, I knew that THIS was the perfect location to host the shower!
After speaking with the shop owners, John & Denise Capelli, I was pleased to find that the cost to rent the space was reasonable. Plus, since there was no need to purchase flowers and minimal cost for decorations (surrounded by hundreds of gorgeous flowers, who could ask for more?!), I not only salvaged my budget, but discovered a beautiful and unique space to host my friend’s shower.
Thinking outside of the box can most certainly save you money, but more importantly than the savings, it will offer a memorable event for your guests, and especially your guest of honor! Denver is rich in distinctive venues that are cost effective: art galleries, kitschy retail stores, vacant commercial spaces and just about any place that you find unique and special!
A few questions to keep in mind as you search:
- What is the venue’s maximum occupancy?
- What is the parking situation?
- How is access & set-up for caterers? Is there a kitchen?
- Is a staff member required to be on-site? If so, is the cost included in the rental fee?
- What is the rental fee during regular business hours; after hours?
- Most importantly, never be afraid to use a little bit of creativity and ingenuity!
Happy Party Planning!
