These Boots Are Made For Walking, etc.: Why You've Gotta Walk In San Francisco
Don’t be that jerk who drives to the mailbox. In a city so compact and interesting, it is practically a crime to not wear your trendy walking boots to an unrecognizable pulp.
San Francisco Drivers Are Cuh-razy
I thought I wanted a scooter with ever fiber of my body, until I actually spent some time walking around on the San Francisco streets. My fears were affirmed when I asked my hairdresser about the huge cast on her foot, only to be told that she was run over by a bus. One that she just got off of. The roads are windy, there are lots of hills, but people still drive fast. This is why I prefer the sidewalk.

It's Easy

Not only is the city very small, there’s also one of everything you’ll need in each neighborhood. This is the most refreshing part of moving here from Los Angeles, where I’d have to get in the car to pick up my dry cleaning, or buy a can of tomato sauce. Who knows? If you walk around a little in San Francisco, maybe you’ll find a specialty store that only sells jarred heirloom tomatoes.
Parking
Even when you can find a parking spot, it’s probably going to be difficult to get into. Parallel parking on a hill with a 45 degree gradient? No thanks. Plus, I’m that person who always ends up driving away later with the emergency brake on.
The Real Locals Do It
Walking in San Francisco is more than a habit: It’s a culture, or a mindset. You have to train your brain to think of walking as your default form of transportation. And ohmigod, you’ll be, like, so European.
Warm Up On Chilly Days
SoCal natives may complain that it’s cold up here, but we’ve got perfect active weather. No one wants to walk two miles up a million hills when it’s 80 degrees. Get moving, and you’ll start to appreciate the refreshing temperature.

This place has everything you need and for cheap. Cute little rolling bags, bathroom accessories, funny little lighters, etc. all crammed in a few tight aisles.
It's Free!
That means you don’t have to pay.
Connect With People
Metropolitan California doesn’t have the rule about respecting the pedestrian bubble, the way cities like New York or Chicago do. San Francisco is definitely one of the west coast cities that offers the perfect climate for human interaction. Fewer people in cars means this unique friendliness is able to reach fruition, and you’ll be friends with the informative guy at the cheese shop, or the lost Brazilian girl searching for the art school in no time.
Then there are the crazies. Growing up in Chicago’s South Loop has made me no stranger to urban vagabonds, but the kinds we see in San Francisco are colorful! Just last week I saw a guy shout out names of vegetables for 15 minutes, as well as a nurturing young man who had 2 Persian cats living inside his trench coat.

The Muni Is Smelly
Like the breath of a dragon who just smoked a cigar and ate some pepperoni Combos. Yeah.
Walking Is Like Having A Date With Yourself
Why bother searching for companionship from someone who shares your qualities and interests, when you can just hang with yourself on a walk? It is great for self-esteem, as all jokes are sure to be laughed at.
You Can Breathe In The Air
It’s not as gross as the air in most other big cities.
Stumble Onto Hidden Spots
I only found these little places via accidental walk-by.
