Silly things that make YOU sad (and then make you laugh at yourself for feeling sad!)
Do you ever find yourself feeling sad? Lonely? Depressed? Sure...we all do sometimes, right? But what about the funny, not that big of a deal things that make you sad? (I mean. Not REALLY sad...just those little things that make you frown for half a second!)
Old, Old Guinness
I opened up my fridge just this morning to grab my lunch. I saw this lonely can o’ Guinness shoved in the back by the O.J. I immediately though “mmmm…Guinness”. But, then I realized, that Guinness was a “congrats on your move” housewarming present. I moved well over TWO years ago. I assume it’s not going to taste so good these days. {insert sad frowny face here} (Note: The O.J. has been in there for awhile too…apparently my room mate and I don’t open the fridge too often!)
Waking up juuuuuust before your alarm goes off...
I HATE this. My (stupid) body clock seems to think that my true wake up time is twenty minutes before I actually have to REALLY get up. So…I wake up…blink my eyes fifty times so I can focus on the time…realize it’s almost (but not quite) time to get up…flop back down and attempt to snooze for the rest of the time. But does it work? NO!
King of Kong
This is a documentary about video games. I don’t know if it’s because I found the protagonist so identifiable or because the antagonist is so supremely evil, but this movie, this VIDEO GAME movie, made me bawl. Silly Gillian.
Robots with emotions
I get really upset at the idea of artificial intelligence. Perhaps I’m getting all Buddhist, but I figure that life involves enough suffering without creating additional intelligent beings who can feel pain. I cry every time I watch Wall E, Short Circuit, Batteries Not Included, or AI (mind you, I cry at AI mostly because it was a really terrible movie).
Monkey in clothing
You know they just want to fling feces. It's sad when they can't.
Birds in Cages
I used to have a budgie, and seeing him talking to himself in the mirror broke my heart. But then I'd let him out so he could fly around the house, and he'd fly smack into the window and knock himself out, even if the blinds were down. That was sad. Stupid, and sad.
Ok. I’m not 100% in the bleeding heart category. I did laugh, at first. But then I started to feel a little sad. Poor little frog!

Songs on the Radio
When you are in your car and turn the channel on the radio and you get the chorus to one of your favorite songs then realize it’s the last chorus and it’s going to be over in 2 more seconds when you thought it was the begining of the song.
These Two Songs
- Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog
- Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter, Paul, and Mary
I don’t know why!
Leaving Snow-Proof Safety Cone Behind
I work at a Plaintif’s law firm, where we represent lots of injured construction workers, so naturally, snow-proof safety cone is our most prized mascot at the front desk. Though he is celebrated and cooed at daily, I always feel a pang of sadness as I depart on Friday evenings, imagining his lonely weekend ahead. (Thanks, Alicia K. Thanks for making me actually feel sorry for some carefully arranged yarn. That’s talent for ya).
Caged up balloons
There’s something really sad about seeing caged balloons even though the happy colors are still there. They want to be free! But then THAT will make someone sad too, as we’ve all been that kid who accidentally let go of a balloon and watched it get smaller and smaller in the sky until the atmosphere burned up the poor little thing.
Dogs that always look sort of sad
The only reason I have a Pekingese is because someone was selling him on the side of the road in China. This was pretty much his expression.
People Eating Alone
I get reallyyy sad when I see people eating alone and I don’t know why. Even if they seem perfectly happy to be doing so, it makes me really sad. I actually love eating alone so this makes absolutely no sense. But it’s SO sad to see!
