In my opinion this is the best all-around hair salon in the state, and I will happily tell you why. First of all it is a signature location. Meaning that there are no other locations in the world like it. Second of all, the owner, Jack, is one of the most famous stylists in the world. Originally hailing from New York City—where he made his name amongst celebrities and rockstars. Years later he decided that the uppity North Scottsdale district was in dire need of good hair.

When the Kierland Commons was built a few years back, Jack made his move and acquired a very large 3000 square foot building to create what he calls “hair heaven”. Etch features a full-service day-spa and hair salon, and they boast some of the best nail techs in the state. The place is amazing. Featuring a Vogue New York Contemporary theme, slim leather chairs and plenty of help at the front desk. Five-stars is an understatement of the service that you receive here.

Patrons enjoy chilled beer or fine wine, or coffee and tea while they are waiting for an appointment. Their training course is very strict and it takes about 16 months or more, if you pass, to get your own chair. But the end result is a fantastic haircut, scalp massage, and style that are second-to-none; except for the price that is. I only go to this hair salon because Jack is the only person who has never screwed my hair up. They also use a different style of cutting hair, employing the workings of a flat razor that they use to make precise cuts in the hair, as opposed to shears, which most stylists favor.

A well-known national brand of shampoo that actually emanated from a salon is the hype that surrounds Sassoon. But all of the hype aside, the main reason why people frequent this high-priced marvel is because they simply do great hair! Their South Scottsdale based salon follows strictly in that tradition. All of their stylists are put through rigorous training courses that are created by the master salon in New York city.

Basically you are getting your hair cut, colored and styled by stylists who have the cosmetology equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in hair. And thank goodness. Yes you will pay handsomely to look it. But considering that our hair takes months just to grow an inch or so, I feel it is money well spent.

Their color techs are out-of-this-world and can easily give you the best damn weave that you will ever get. Or they can make your hair smurf-blue, your choice. Of course what would a great salon be without the full service? When you get a $100 haircut here, you will also get a full shampoo and conditioning and the oh’ so delightful scalp massage that practically makes you doze off in the chair.

This place is world famous not only for their amazing and attentive stylists, but also for their school of cosmetology that features one of the most stringent curriculums around. When patrons visit Taglio they expect to spend hundreds of dollars.

In turn, they expect to have an experience, not just a haircut. This is exactly what they get. When you walk into Taglio you may be shaggy and need some work. Toni and Guy are pair of world-famous stylists that have created the ideal hair salon, which feeds high-end stylists in from their well-known academy in South Scottsdale. Stylists have to undergo a very stringent and hard-to-pass curriculum and then following their graduation from the academy they must complete a lengthy internship at the mall location. If they finally manage to keep with it, they will one day have their own chair and booth.

Kind of makes you wonder how many stylists flunk out of this army-ranger-like training method. But it is all with the best of intentions in mind.
