When I was in 9th grade, my good friend Jenny got a record deal. The boy I was dating at the time scoffed at my enthusiasm for her saying, "You know how many girls get a record deal, and then nothing ever comes of it?" My 15 -year-old self was appalled by his pessimistic view of the world. "Of course Jenny will be famous!" I thought. Of course I was wrong, and Jenny never even recorded a song, let alone a hit album. There are, however, countless female singers with albums out there who are going unnoticed. I'd like to highlight a select few that I personally enjoy/love/obsess over...

LUCY WOODWARD

You may have heard Lucy’s First hit single from back in February of 2003 called “Dumb Girls.” She has released a new album called “Lucy Woodward is… Hot and Bothered” and let me tell you, it’s fan-fucking-tastic. You can get it on itunes, but it will be available in hard copy soon. Check her myspace for that info! She is so awesome!!!!!!

Lucy is playing at The Zipper Factory THIS THURSDAY JUNE 5th!!!!! She’s awesome live; I’ve seen her perform once already. Also, this will be her last show in NYC for a while, so come out! There’s no drink minimum and they are making a special $4 drink just for this night called the “Hot and Bothered”

ALANA GRACE

If you’ve ever watched the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, then you’ve heard Alana’s Voice. In the scene where Alexis Bledel’s character, Lena, stands on the pier overlooking the ocean in Greece, Alana’s song “Black Roses Red” plays in the background. This is where I first heard it. I then searched for her in itunes and bought her full album. Every song is amazing.

JOANNA PACITTI

Joanna had a song called “Watch Me Shine” which was featured in the movie Legally Blonde. It was the song for one of those fabulous “getting-your-life-together” montages, where the main character is shown working super-hard, and is transformed by the end of it. I also came across her album on itunes and I LOVE it. She has quite a voice. Recently she was dropped from her label (who knows why!) and she’s now doing some great things on her own.
Check out her MySpace…

LUCY LIVE!

She sings her song “Slow Recovery,” which I think is the most beautiful song she’s done yet. A lot of her other stuff is super up-beat and fun with amazingly relatable lyrics. Download it from itunes!!!! It’s so worth it.

ANNA NALICK

You’ve certainly heard Anna Nalick’s music before. She’s actually a platinum recording artist, but no one seems to know who she is when I mention her. She had a hit single called “Breathe (2am)” a few years ago. Her entire CD is amazing and filled with tons of female angst :)
She just put out a new song called “Shine” which is fantastic, and she’s working on a full album. My personal favorite is her song “In the Rough”

What to do next...

I’m sure I sound like a broken record at this point, but go to your itunes store – or wherever you get your music – and search for these ladies!
You won’t be disappointed.
Smush, out.

I know this is lame, but I still think Britney Spears’ “Sometimes” is the greatest… it’s got everything in it, teenage angst, sexual frustration, trust issues, all that, Smush… except it’s a little disconcerting when your immigrant parents like it too and ask you, “What is the song about?” and you have to truthfully tell them, “Guy wants to have sex and girl wants to wait”.

Nice work, Smush. You’re still a dork, though.
