German Gemuetlichkeit in and around Denver

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

This is a guide to a little bit of German "Gemuetlichkeit" in and around Denver. Learn where you can hang out and speak German while enjoying a Hefeweizen or 7 Minute Pils and find all the spots for authentic food and drink.

This one is the real deal where you can find the real “Wiener Schnitzel”. It is a little off the beaten path but worth the trip.

Rheinlander Bakery

Arvada, CO 80002

Lots of good German baked goods made with real butter and lots of sugar. I recommend Nussecken and Rumkugeln.

Continental Deli

Denver, CO 80206

Here is another favorite destination in Cherry Creek. This is the place to get your Milka, Quark, Sauerkraut, Salami, Bratwurst and more. (And even blood sausage if you really cannot live without…). It’s really worth the trip, and there is even parking behind the building.

Chinook Tavern

Denver, CO 80206

If you want to meet THE Germans in Denver, visit the “Stammtisch” every last Wednesday of the month. Everyone is welcome (as long as you speak German), and the gettogether starts around 8:30 p.m. The food is very tasty, and the beer and owners are authentic German.

Cost Plus World Market

Denver, CO 80206

Well, Cost Plus does not just carry German goods, but I have to mention the authentic Marzipan I buy there every year around Christmas. They carry real German “Marzipanbrote” that are not only perfect but also very inexpensive. It is the best deal in town.

Vail

Hotel Gasthof Gramshammer

Vail, CO 81657

This the place to stay during the Vail Oktoberfest, which is an annual “must-attend” event for some of us Germans here. It’s a great reason to get out of town in September to see the aspens turn and at the same time enjoy some nice fall weather while dancing the chicken dance with too many people wearing Lederhosen. But it’s all good, and Paulaner with its almost famous spokesperson Helmut is a big presence during the weekend. The Gramshammer is right in the heart of Vail and the Oktoberfest. It is a great deal during this time, but you have to book early.
