My (and Your) Favorite Musicals

When I was a kid I loved musicals (The Sound of Music was my favorite movie for about 3 years-- which is a pretty long time in kiddie years), and now that I'm a so-called adult I have to say I'm not as big as a musical lover as I once was-- on average I see one musical every 2 or so years. But that doesn't stop me for getting a tad nostalgic when I hear Julie Andrews break out into song. So what are your favorite musicals?-- I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours...

Thoroughly Modern Millie

I know I waxed poetic about Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music, but I think this might be my favorite Julie Andrews musical. It’s smart, funny, and the clothes are totally fab. I was in New York when TMM was on Broadway, and sadly I didn’t see it!

Thoroughly Modern Millie

One of the best opening credits for a musical— I think.

Gigi

This movie is total eye candy. The leads (Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan) are totally classy, while turn of the century Paris (the setting) is super romantic. The songs are good, but I think I like the drama of it all even better. Watch the trailer here

Les Miserables

I can’t even describe how much I love this musical. I’ve seen it SO many times, but I neverrr get tired of it. When me, my sister, and my sister’s fiance get together we have the tendency to sing the entire musical since we’ve memorized all the songs. One time we didn’t realize her roommate was home sleeping until the next morning when she asked us wtf we were doing.

On My Own

I can’t possibly pick a favorite song, but I highly enjoy “On My Own” because I used to know how to play it on the piano. I would always sing along of course (please note, I have an awful voice!).

Spring Awakening

I saw Spring Awakening when it came to LA and I went in having absolutely no idea what it was about— I was sort of expecting it to be like Rent, so I was pretty surprised when it was set in the 19th century and featured a rocking score by Duncan Sheik. Oh and not to the mention the fact that it featured teenagers going at it— very Gossip Girl. But I thought the music was pretty good and I sort of liked the weird juxtaposition between a rock & roll score and a play about 19th century German teenagers.

My Fair Lady

I always liked this movie— loved the songs, loved Audrey Hepburn (even though she couldn’t sing, and the role rightly belonged to Julie Andrews), and loved the costumes. I saw the play in London several years ago (Jonathan Pryce played Professor Higgins and Martine McCutcheon— who plays Hugh Grant’s love interest in Love Actually— played Eliza) and I liked it almost as much as I liked the movie!

One of my favorite scenes…

Grease...is the word

Can’t say I ever saw this on Broadway, but it remains one of those movies AND musicals I could watch on repeat. I can’t even pinpoint why! Okay maybe it’s John Travolta’s swinging hips and Olivia’s black spandex.

I was OBSESSED with Les Mis…both before and after actually seeing it in NYC.

I was lucky enough to see Thoroughly Modern Millie with Sutton Foster—fantastic!
