Obsessed, interested, or just even just somewhat knowledgeable of fashion? Maybe you have no stinkin clue and think that the Abercrombie Moose is iconic. Whatever the case, Emerald Dandy wants to know who YOU consider to be an icon in fashion. From Anna to Yves and all things in between, read on for a fashionably quick lesson of guidspots fashion icons.
Miuccia Prada
What she’s known for: Pushing the envelope each and every season.
Miuccia Prada (grandfather of Mario Prada, the founder) has done numbers to the fashion scene, always going against the trend and doing what interests her most. Though many of these designers are truly trendsetters in their own regard, Miuccia reigns above the rest, always managing to wow the crowds season after season.
Case in point: Notice how big degrade (or ombre) accessories and clothing have been as of late? That all started with Miuccia during her Fall 07 collection.
Where to keep yourself up-to-date on all things fashion.
What he’s known for: The signature red dress.
Valentino, recently retired, focused his career on dressing women as beautifully as possible with very feminine silhouettes. Typically keeping to a very simple color palette, Valentino believed that there are only three important colors: black, white, and of course his signature red.
Christopher Bailey
What he’s known for: Revitalizing Burberry.
Thanks to Christopher Bailey, Burberry is no longer a myriad of a Novacheck (also known as the Burberry Plaid). Upon his arrival at the house, Bailey used his creative juices to create Burberry Prorsum (latin for: moving forward) which is Burberry’s newest pride and joy, their runway line.
Manolo Blahnik
What he’s known for: Sexy sky high stilletos.
Manolo Blahnik has made quite the name for himself as he’s spent most of his life creating sexy footwear that women across the globe lust for. For those of you not too aware of the shoe world: Carrie Bradshaw’s blue shoes from the movies were Manolo’s – and those shoes sold out days after the movie aired.
It’s thanks to Blahnik that there has been such an emphasis on flattering footwear in the world of fashion. Though some of my pieces may be death defying and sometimes impossible to wear, it’s all done with the notion of making every woman look (and feel) like a million bucks.
Azzedine Alaia
Alaia. Because how many designers have come out of Tunisia?
Obviously not a picture of him, but of one of his designs.
I just love how the dresses look on the female body.
Oooooh, and these shoes . . .
Diane von Furstenberg
DvF is a goddess and a fashion icon, if there ever was one! CFDA President and lifetime achievement award, what, what.
Max Azria
I want to marry this man. OK so for as long as I’ve been obsessed with him and all he does (BCBG!!), I’ve never seen a picture of him. But yeah, I guess I’d still marry him. He’s that awesome. But it would probably be better if he just wanted to be my grandfather or something. And that hat? Totally adorable!

Karl Lagerfeld
What he’s known for: Garish and over the top runway shows (Fendi on the Great Wall, anyone?)
Karl Lagerfeld is truly iconic in this day and age for his influence on the world of fashion. Whether it be his exploration into furs at the House of Fendi, his very preppy and modern looks for his own line, or his mind blowingly timeless and classic yet modern looks at Chanel, Lagerfeld always has something spectacular going.
Marc Jacobs
What he’s known for: (Fashionably) late fashion shows and man skirts.
Thanks to Marc Jacobs, a surge in the world of American Design is finally resurfacing. Pre-MJ there wasn’t very much going on in the world of American Fashion, so it’s most certainly refreshing to have him on the scene. Whether he’s pushing the envelopes of his own line or creating masterpieces at Louis Vuitton, Marc most certainly manages to do more than ruffle a few feathers each season.
Roy Halston
What he’s known for: Creating Couture in America.
From his Studio 54 era days as America’s top Couture Designer, Halston has remained a legend all his own, even long after his passing.
Known for his jersey dresses, jumpsuits, and ultrasuede thigh highs, Halston blazed the path for many American Designers, even long after his time.
Yves Saint Laurent
What he’s known for: The female suit, safari style jackets
May he rest in peace, YSL has truly become a legend in fashion. From his beginnings in the 60s at the House of Dior, to his last showings at YSL before retiring, YSL always created edgy yet extremely wearable looks even to modern day standards. Popularly known for his safari jackets and his women’s take on menswear, YSL always looked for new ways to make the female figure look beautiful.
There is currently a traveling YSL exhibit possibly coming to a city near you, and I highly recommend you check it out!
Sylvia Venturini Fendi
What she’s known for: creating the “IT” bag.
It’s because of Miss Fendi that our society has become so obsessed on the latest “it” bag. Having created the Baguette Bag over 10 years ago (named after the French Baguette – a bag meant to be worn under the arm), Fendi created a phenomenon that would make women skip paying rent simply to have the hottest new handbag.

Anna Wintour
Anna is known for: Judging, and judging some more.
Editor at Vogue, Anna Wintour is certainly not a woman to be messed with. Heralding one of the biggest fashion magazines of all time, Wintour often dictates the direction fashion is going. She may seem scary but she’s got the gusto to be quite a powerhouse.
Michael Kors
Michael Kors is another man I would marry, but only if he gives me all his purses, shoes, and dresses. Oh, I adore this man.
