Extermely Overrated Movies
It's the movie that everybody loves... except you. Not that you out-and-out HATE any movie; but there are some flicks - cherished by the rest of Western Civilization - that you just can't stand. It truly is a matter of taste on this one, and yours just isn't feeling it.
Scarface
Ugh. Where do I begin? Brian De Palma wasn’t trying to channel THE GODFATHER in this modern-day gangster flick, but he sure wasn’t going for likability either. Maybe I have some form of latent xenophobia, but I can’t stand Tony Montana. I think the guy is arrogant loser from beginning to end. The blood, the guns, the coke – bah. Give me the Corleone Family Saga any day over this piece of whatever.
The Aviator
Thank God Scorsese was spared the embarrassment of winning an Oscar for this hunk of junk. If you’ve ever wondered what desperation smells like, watch THE AVIATOR. From beginning to end, Scorsese sacrifices every bit of his trademark style to produce a broad, unlikable film. Clearly, he was fearful that he would never win “Best Director” and made a movie for everyone but himself. Thankfully, the Academy ignored it. And, in an act of utter defiance, he made THE DEPARTED and finally got an award he deserved.
The English Patient
What was all the talk about? This movie was horrible!!
Magnolia
Maybe it’s just me, but I really don’t think this movie is “genius.” I just found the whole thing to be kind of pretentious…
Spiderman
Lame Lame Lame. Somehow I got caught up in the hype and actually went to see two of the first three in this series. Don’t know what I was thinking, especially the second time. Both of them were terrible.
Citizen Kane
Yes, the movie is well shot, and yes this movie has great acting, and yes, it has a great twist ending, but, honestly, this movie is much better as a short. It’s too long and just too much emphasis is pushed on the irony surrounding who rosebud is. Had I not known who “Rosebud” was prior to watching, at the end of the movie I would have been PISSED. Honestly, the ending is really a mean trick.
Little Miss Sunshine
Maybe had this movie come out in 1996 – instead of 2006 – I would have been swept away with the rest of America. Truthfully, I didn’t think LMS was bad at all… I just didn’t get why everyone else was falling over it. It’s got a good script, great performances, it’s funny – for the most part – I just didn’t think it deserved the IT status everybody else gave it.
Alien Vs. Predator
Okay, was I expecting a cinematic masterpiece? God, no. But, if you’re going to jump the shark with two storied sci-fi/horror franchises, can you at least do it with style? FREDDY VS. JASON was tongue-in-cheek, self-referential, and it didn’t ask to be taken seriously. AVP, however, wanted to be seen as a legitimate installment. What we all got was a poorly shot, stupid, uninteresting movie in the Artic. Somehow, it made enough money to warrant a sequel.
Knocked Up
Once again, a good movie I just wasn’t into. Seth Rogan is great and I love Judd Apatow’s work, but it feels like he’s stretching a bit here. It’s a movie about growing up, but I just feel like it hits a little too close to the mark for a guy who’s more comfortable making movies about other problems – like lifelong virginity. Either way, everybody else loved it.
Atonement
Did anyone else hate this movie besides me? 1) The main characters had no chemistry, 2) Okay, I know it was beautiful, but they may as well just call it “A Movie About Kiera Knightly’s Face”, 3) What about that ending? Maybe it worked better in book-format, but it seems like 5th grade creative writing class #1 no-no ending: “Just kidding! It was just a dream!” The worst part is, everyone else I talk to loved it.
Wall-E
I said it. Yeah, Wall-E is totally adorable and compelling, but once the movie got up into space it was mediocre at best. Movie of the year? Oh, please!
