The Top 4 Used Bookstores – the Denver Edition

A room without books is like a body without a soul.
- Cicero

Denver’s not a bad town if
you like outdoors, winters, and hippies. But really it’s not too bad for used
books too. I’ve found some of the best stores with the most interesting
character and culled them for your benefit, Mr. Bibliophile. So, in no
particular order, here’s the top 4 used bookstores in the Denver area. One is the best. You must choose
wisely.

As anyone who’s helped me move can tell
you, I know books. I love them and I adorn my house with them. They are
my favorite part of life (next to my girlfriend of course).

#1 Capitol Hill Books

Capitol Hill
Books – This store is one floor, full of mostly soft cover
fiction. They don’t purchase used books, but they’ll take them for store credit.
It’s not the largest in town, but they’ve been around for a while, and are
members of the Rocky Mountain Antiquarian
Booksellers Association. This store is easily accessible from either Colfax
& Grant.

#2 Mutiny Now! Art, Books and Coffee

A nice quirky store down on the Broadway antique run (just north of
I-25 and south of downtown), Mutiny Now! is a great place to find
books while sipping on a coffee. The place also has a number of local
politically-charged paintings adorning the walls, is manned at any given time
by any number of eccentric clerks, and as the name implies, contains a large
amount of political books. This is definitely your place if you’re interested
in either Bukowski or Marx.

#3 The Denver Book Mall

The Denver Book Mall –
This cool unique store located on Broadway is organized differently than the
other bookstores above. Here, each seller (and there are over 15) has a section
of the store, and their books are then organized by subject. The genres range
from children’s books to natural history to military to film noir.

#4 - Fahrenheit's Books

Fahrenheit’s
Books is a bibliophile’s dream. This place is so
eclectic it strains your memory (and usually your checkbook). Usually I end up going and buying at least 5
books. The store really has so much to choose from, but they have an “emphasis
on Vintage Paperbacks, Science Fiction, Metaphysics, History, Western
Americana and Fiction.” If you don’t find something here you like
when browsing, there’s not much else this guide can help you with. This picture
is of their old place before their move. When the new site is up
and running, I’ll update it so you can find it even easier. The old address is
52 Broadway, and the new address is at 210 South Broadway. Go there! Now!
