Disney Princesses from a feminist perspective

“Disney is adding some diversity” like they haven’t been doing that since “Aladdin” their first Middle Eastern hero? Pocahontas, Native American. Mulan, Chinese. Esmeralda, Romani. Kida, some kinda PoC

For what it’s worth, the character “Princess” Tiana’s interest in the prince is (at least initially) all business: she’s trying to start her own business, and if she helps him first, he’ll help her.

@michellei that is good know about the business. I haven’t tried taking my 4 year old to a movie but I bet she will like this one.

Shes super pretty? Well Yeah, thats the point, it is the BEAUTY and the beast.

Belle’s a fine character, but as a role model for young girls, she’s pretty insidious. “Stay with your guy, even if he’s a ‘beast’ who yells at and frightens you. Someday he’ll change if you stay!”

No, Belle didn’t give him the time of day until Beast began to change on his own, notice that when she started to talk to him was after he saved her and decided to change on his own.

@gabstersm: Exactly. The Beast risked his life saving her. She spoke her mind with him and he did change. When she left a second time, it wasn’t because he was rude to her. He let her go.

Mulan’s one of my favorite role models for girls. She demonstrates there isn’t just ONE mode of femininity. And that while women are just as capable, female empowerment ISN’T about just emulating men.

The way she dresses? SHES ARABIAN.

Re: jessicake Well, yeah, and for a woman of Arabic /royalty/, it’d be pretty scandalous (downright frowned upon) for her to be dressed like a common entertainer/belly-dancer.

Essentially a princess. She promoted unity, and acceptance/celebration of diversity. She singlehandedly brought a stop to the skirmish between her tribe & the settlers. She’s a GREAT role model.

Yeah, but they totally distorted the facts.

Tons of movies distort the facts to make the story more interesting. And most of the teachers I had went on to teach us the true story after that movie came out.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but I THINK the best one can say of Alice is: maybe she’s learned a lesson. ..What that lesson is, I have no idea. To think first before diving in..?

Alice was the princess on drugs. Wait, right? Didn’t she take those crazy pills? Or am I confused? hm.

She totally took the crazy pills, just because the label told her to. I’d say that SHOULD teach kids not to imbibe just anything, but they might see this movie and think “Weird pills = adventure time!”

Lewis Caroll was a nutso. Enough said.

She didnt even know she was a princess for 16 years of her life, and the whole point of the movie is that she pricked her finger and went into a deep sleep because of a curse. Geeze get the story.

I never really got what was the big deal aout Aurora. She blew.

@jessicake I don’t blame Aurora for the role they wrote for her. I wish Disney would have shown how other qualities should have been more important to a princess.

Although, I did watch this the other day and that prince man as like ""Oh man i don’t think so? i have to marry her!? well ok at least the three fairies are coming to make her hot!"

This is my favorite movie…thus, I am sad.

Part of the lesson in this movie was that making deals with the evil which was wrong. .

Not only is 16 too young for marriage, but at any age it’s not a great message to encourage girls to dedicate their hopes/dreams/aspirations/LIVES in hope of getting a guy to notice her!

Yeah, but the singing is cool!!!

Although 16 is young to be married now, you have to think of the time, where marrying by 16 was common, possibly even younger.

I’m pretty sure most kids watching it know Ariel is wrong to trade her voice for legs. The movie makes it very clear that Ursula is an awful sea witch. Also the original story is much much worse.

Also Jasmine was 15 when she fell in love with Alladin it freaked me out when I found that out cuz you watch these movies when your 4 or younger and you think that when you’re a teenager you’re going

@jessicake I don’t think that’s a great reason for the heroine’s lack of aspiration: look how long ago “Mulan” was set. The problem in this case was the source material itself.

Eh. It’s a classic. And I think kids are smart enough to know the difference.

So rather than wish to go to the ball on a night when the ball is all she can think about (because that’s all anyone talks about), she should wish to get lots and lots of money as a wealthy merchant?

But all the animals were her friends!!! And they helped her do her housework!!! hehe
