Experience Boulder in a Day, Just 20 Miles from the DNC and Downtown Denver

Despite its recent gentrification, Boulder is still one of the more unique large towns in the region. Even if you're only passing through for a day, it's possible to try out a few of these many ways to experience the thrills of the self-titled Republic of Boulder.

Places to Find Locally Produced Items

Bringing a gift back for someone special or just want a memento to remind you of Boulder? Try out some of these places.

Boulder Farmers' Market

1300 Canyon Blvd, Boulder, CO 80302

Pick up fresh produce, locally crafted honeys and jams, still-warm bread or fresh flowers. Boulder Farmers’ Market also has a few vendors that sell prepared meals, great for a Wednesday snack or Saturday lunch.

On Pearl Street

Some of my favorite gift shops line the popular Pearl Street Mall.

Art Mart

1222 Pearl St, Boulder, CO 80302

A cooperative gallery for local artists, unique pieces of art, both decorative and functional, abound. Due to its selection, prices tend to be a bit high.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory

1300 Pearl St, Boulder, CO 80302

Though not truly local, this chain started across the mountains in Durango, Colorado. Still, these chocolates are some of the best to be found in the area.

Activities for Those With Children

Having kids in tow requires a drastically altered way of planning a day trip. Once exhaustion and hunger set in, nobody is going to be having fun any more. These are some places to head that are sure to entertain everybody.

National Center for Atmospheric Research

1850 Table Mesa Dr, Boulder, CO 80305

Up on the top of a small mountain (or very large hill) NCAR has a number of fun weather and climate-focused interactive displays inside the research facility. Behind the complex, a short series of paths gives more insight into local weather patterns and also branches out into miles of trails that head through the Flatirons. Elevation may be a factor here, as walking any distance at 5,000+ feet above sea level is hard if not yet adjusted.

Pearl Street Mall

1420 Pearl St, Boulder, CO 80302

More than simply a mall, Pearl Street’s four pedestrian-only blocks are a sight and activity thrill for all ages. Kids can play on large metal sculptures of animals or prance amongst jets of water that soar out of a walkway-level fountain. There are often street entertainers, street musicians and balloon animal sculptors drawing crowds to their performances. Drop into Ben & Jerry’s for a sweet ice cream treat or head to the Boulder Bookstore and pick up a few stories for later.

Places for the Drinker

Remember, traveling to a higher elevation makes alcohol hit a person much harder. Be cautious of this as you head out. That said, Boulder has everything from a meadery to more traditional breweries just begging you to sample their goods.

Redstone Meadery
