Get Wet: Scuba Diving in a Land Locked State

Colorado has one of the highest number of divers per-capita in the country. While most of us travel to Mexico, the Caribbean, or other tropical destinations to dive, this guide tells how to scratch the diving itch between vacations.

Places to Get Wet

On any given day, odds are I would rather be diving. I just want to breathe underwater.

Volunteer with the Deep Blue Sea Foundation - Downtown Aquarium

Certified divers can volunteer to clean and maintain aquarium exhibits, feed and care for fish and other animals, and make faces at visitors through the aquarium glass.

Visibility: Nil – 30’
Water Temperature: May ~ 55° F / August ~ 70° F / September ~ 55° F
Access: Beach/shore entry developed exclusively for divers
Facilities: Outhouses at dive area.
One end is roped off for divers. A Cessna 310 is located at 30’. Lots of crawdads and small fish.

Certification and Ongoing Dive Education

Check with any dive shop for these courses.

PADI Basic Open Water Certification

Getting your basic open water certification is easy! Most dive shops offer weekend certification classes that cover all of the classroom and pool instruction you’ll need. Then you need to complete 4 open water dives, either in our own Aurora Reservoir or (recommended) travel to an exotic location to complete the dives.

High Altitude Diver Certification

By high, I mean elevation. Not, well, you know…

Dry Suit Diving

The water in colorado is COLD. The perfect opportunity to learn how to dive in a dry suit. Diaper optional.
