My friend Anke said she would buy a pot-bellied pig for the office if we hit a certain milestone. We're getting close, so this guide is to help Anke and anyone else pig shopping in Colorado. Potbellied pigs are also known as Vietnamese pigs and miniature pigs, though they aren't very miniature when full-grown.
[update: we hit our milestone, but Anke has yet to pony up a pig – if you are as upset as I am, let Anke know ]
Getting A Pot-Bellied Pig
Pot bellied pigs are super cute when they are little, but like most mammals, they get bad breath and nasty habits as they age. You absolutely should not buy a pot-bellied pig from a breeder, as there are many sweet pigs that need to find new homes. Look on Craigslist or contact Pig-A-Sus (link below) to find a used pig. Pig-A-Sus is a not-for-profit dedicated to caring for pot-bellied pigs and educating people about pot-bellied pigs.
I’d like to make this funny, but Sioux Robbins, the woman behind Pig-a-sus seems pretty cool and is doing a good thing. I also do sincerely love pigs & I don’t mean for breakfast.
Feeding Your Pig
Check the resources section of this guide for some sound advice about pig feeding. I don’t actually know anything about it, except that over-feeding and under-feeding are bad. I’ve always heard that pigs will eat anything, so I’d suggest California Pizza Kitchen, since the pizza there is obviously not intended for human consumption.
A pig that is loved and taken care of is about as gemütlich as it gets. If you are German like my friend Anke, however, you will have to work to build trust with your pig. You have a lot of history to overcome.
Unlike Pigs, Chickens Suck
My family kept chickens when I was a kid, and I can say first-hand that chickens are filthy, nasty creatures. My mom would send me out to get eggs, and the chickens would wait on top of their coop, ready to launch their obese selves on little five year old me. They are also really stupid.
I’m a vegetarian, but frankly this doesn’t seem like a bad use of a chicken.
