What to Do In Boston When It's Ridiculously Hot Outside

Boston is known for it's chilly weather, but come summer the temperatures can get WAY up there. Sometimes the heat is so unbearable, you just need to escape. Here is your guide to escaping Boston's heat and having tons of fun while you're at it.
Back in the day I stayed with my brother in his unconditioned apartment in Boston during the summer… Most miserable week of my life… But I sure did get a kick out of my daily Dunkin’ Donut visits… What? It helped me cool down!
OMG, your guide photo is like my worst nightmare come true. I had no idea about the pool at the Colonnade. So cool!
Grab Dinner Outside
Boston has some of the best restaurants for al fresco dining. Most restaurants make sure their guests are comfortably sitting in the shade and a glass of sangria will definitely help cool you down. And al fresco dining means awesome people watching!
Another great spot for people watching, Eastern Standard is located right in Kenmore. There’s always all kinds of crazy Red Sox fans out, but the Eastern Standard’s seating is private enough that you can ignore them if you want.
Oh, and it’s also one of Nick Lachey’s favorite spots when he’s in town!

Brunch at Stephanie’s is one of my favorite things ever. Their eggs benedict is incredibly delicious, but I could just sit here for hours watching people stroll down Newbury Street.
There’s usually a crazy wait here around brunch time, but there’s plenty to do on Newbury St. while you’re waiting!
Go For a Swim
Nothing will cool you off better on a hot day than a dip in a nice cool pool. You probably don’t have your own if you’re living in boston, so you’ll have to look elsewhere.
Colonnade Hotel Pool
The Colonnade Hotel pool is probably one of my favorite parts of summer in Boston. It’s the only roof-top pool in Boston and it’s the perfect spot to go on those blazing hot days. You can get an amazing tan but can also take a dip in the pool when the heat gets to be too much.
It costs $30 to go up for the day (if you’re not a hotel guest) and is SO worth it. They also offer lots of food and really good sangria and mojitos. The perfect excuse to take a day off from work!
Just because you’re in Boston doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get to a beach. Follow my instructions for getting to a couple beaches that don’t even require a car!
Nothing like a beach on a hot summer’s day.
Carson Beach
Boston, MA 02108
Just take the red line to JFK UMass and Carson Beach is only a short walk away. Doesn’t get much easier than that!
Old Orchard Beach
Old Orchard Beach, ME 04064
Take the Amtrak Downeaster straight from North Station in Boston to the First Street Platform. And it’s only a two-minute walk from there. The Amtrak is super easy and comfortable to travel on.
There’s also tons of fun stuff to do at Old Orchard Beach, like amusement parks, miniature golf, restaurants, and tons more. The perfect way to escape the heat!
Go on a Whale Watch
Going on a boat into the nice cool waters is fabulous enough on a super hot day. But the chance to see some whales in the process? Even better! Boston has some great opportunities for whale watching.
These heat-escaping activities should last you all summer long!
Eat Ice Cream
Kind of obvious, but who wouldn’t want ice cream when it’s ridiculously hot out? Boston has some fabulous ice cream and here are the spots where you can get some of the very best!
JP Licks
Many Bostonians will argue that there’s nothing quite like JP Licks. I love them because they always have tons of frozen yogurt choices. Their milk shakes are also quite delish!
Emack & Bolios ice cream shops are fun and unique. And their ice cream menu is HUGE. The line can definitely get out of control sometimes though (especially at the Newbury St. location).
Who doesn’t love Coldstone? With thousands of possible combinations, your ice cream options are endless. While the soft, creamy ice cream isn’t my fave, I do love all the fun candy add-ins. Like it? Love it? Nope. Gotta have it!
Sometimes it’s too hot to even be outside, and those are the best days to wander through a museum. Boston has lots of fabulous museums worth checking out.
The Museum of Fine Arts
The MFA will likely consume your entire day and maybe even the entirety of a heat wave as there is SO much to do and see here. I love going to their special exhibits- coming soon is a Winslow Homer exhibit and an exhibit on art nouveau jewelry- but I also enjoy their regular collections like the Van Goghs, Mary Cassatts, John Singer Sargents, and Andy Warhols. And obviously the Egyptian hall. Who doesn’t love mummies?
The MFA also has a couple fabulous places to dine at, including Bravo Restaurant and the Courtyard Cafe.
Take a stroll down the beautiful halls of the MFA.
Learn about the current exhibits and decide what you want to see on the MFA’s website.
Museum of Science
The Museum of Science is another cool spot you can spend an entire sweltering day. Whether you want to watch an IMAX movie in the Omni Theater, look at the night sky in the planetarium, or just wander around the museum, there is always something to learn at the MOS (no matter your age).
Make sure you check out the human body room and the giant T-Rex, of course!
All the info you need on the museum can be found on their website!
Isabella Stewart Garnder Museum
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is perfect for a hot day because you can spend a couple hours in the museum while also enjoying the beautiful day. How? The museum has a beautiful flower-filled courtyard and when it’s sunny out, the 3-story museum is nice and bright inside.
Also, be sure you dine in the outdoor restaurant.
Oh, and if your name is Isabella, you can get free admission to the museum whenever you want!
