The Book Was Better Than The Movie

I don't know about you, but I usually have mixed feelings when a book I love is turned into a movie. On the one hand you're curious to see these characters materialized in the flesh, but on the other hand, you're really not. And more often than not, I find that I'm usually disappointed with the movie version of a book I really like. Here are some of my book-turned-movie disappointments, what are yours?

High Fidelity

Don’t hate me!! I know everyone LOVES this movie (don’t get me wrong, I love John Cusack as well!), but I have to say that the book is really much better than the movie version— maybe it’s because I love lists (in print), but I just couldn’t bring myself to love the movie as much as the book.

Ok, now again, this wasn’t a terrible movie, and I really give them props for trying to make this book into a movie, because really, I don’t think it was an easy feat. However, given that the book is such a literary tour de force, it was sort of fated to not be as good.

Not a Movie but...

the book Wicked was SO much better than the play.

Or any Michael Crichton novel-come-movie for that matter.

This is a movie I loved, but the book(s) can totally change your views on fantasy fiction, religion and growing up.

This book made me cry. Casting Hillary Swank as Holly was a bad choice. She can’t do romantic comedy.

Into The Wild

This was not a bad movie by any means, but the book was really phenomenal. Jon Krakauer’s writing style really pulls you in, and addresses all kinds of interesting issues that don’t seem to make into the movie.

Memoirs of a Geisha

For a while this was my favorite book, so I was pretty excited when the movie came out. And while I would stay up till 1 or 2am reading the book because I couldn’t put it down, the movie was snore-worthy. I don’t know how they managed to make such a riveting book so boring, but they did!

All Harry Potter Movies

Not that I haven’t watched each one like a little kid on a candy high, but there is no way the movies will ever capture the books’ awesomeness.

The Orchid Thief Was Better Than Adaptation

Widget_c7auwzslpfbpvh7gze7mxv

So maybe that was the point of this movie? That it was really hard to adapt The Orchid Thief into a movie? I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure they were really confused. And had no idea how to make a movie out of The Orchid Thief so they basically just made a movie of them trying to make a movie out of it. Confusing? Yes. And if I had seen the movie before reading the book, there’s no way in Hell I would have ever read the book. And it was an amazing book so that would have been too bad.

Not a bad movie, it just doesn’t work as well as a movie.

I know, I know – pop lit at it’s worst. But still, the book was a great read. The movie… eh.

Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed the movie. But I enjoyed the book waaaaaaaay more!

Ahhh yes, all Harry Potter and Memoirs of a Geisha were the first things to pop into my head!!! But I will definitely think of something else. I usually enjoy the books better than the movie.
