Behold! The Summer season of theatrical performance is upon us. If thou hast a desire for good seating, playful lyrics, and haunting beauties look no further. I undertook this task of relating to you the most astounding theatres the village of San Francisco has to offer. So read on my liege as my humble self drops some theatre knowledge onto thine ass.

The SF Playhouse

Sf Playhouse

533 Sutter St, San Francisco, CA 94102

The SF Playhouse prides itself in showing plays that may make you uncomfortable. Abraham Lincoln’s Big Gay Dance Party from last season is just one example. But this intimate space will make you feel like you’re on stage and will keep you involved with the actors. The SF Playhouse is consistently good.

Golden Gate Theatre

While the GG Theatre is definitely showing it’s age (uncomfortable seats, fading paint, sketchy neighborhood) the quality of its shows breaths youth into each season. Spamalot is currently kicking medieval ass at the GG. I’ll risk a crackhead fight any day to hang out with the Knights of Ni.

Thunderbird Theatre Company

Thunderbird Theatre Company

1246 Folsom St San Francisco, CA 94101

The Thunderbird is a collective of local writers, actors, stage techs, theatre lovers, Shakespearean waifs, guys named Ernest (who are important), and little women. The focus is on making you laugh until tears are dripping from your chin and snot is flying out of your nose.
For the adventurous, check out the auditions for Aaoron Trotter and maybe you’ll be the next one making me red faced with humor.

Orpheum Theatre

1192 Market St, San Francisco, CA 94102

The Orpheum will try to lure your attention away from the stage with it’s amazingly beautiful interior. Sorry Herbst Theatre, Señor Orpheum has kicked your ass in the ambiance department. But when you tear your eyes away from the ornate ceiling, intricate walls and polished pillars try to see the host of broadway shows gracing the stage.
Wicked is currently dropping it’s witch loving story on mesmerized patrons.

Actors Theatre of San Francisco

Actors Theatre of San Francisco

855 Bush St San Francisco, CA 94108

The cushy seats and intimate space may make some squirm while watching the amazing San Francisco Follies , but for those who like their comedy up close, this is the place to be.

Theatre Rhinoceros

Low prices and small spaces make the Rhinoceros a great place to take a chance on a new play. The Rhinoceros is also SF’s premier Queer Theatre, taking home a GLAAD Award in 2008.
If you’re looking for a place that feels like you’re hanging out at your friend’s apartment while watching a play, the Rhinoceros is definitely for you.

The Marsh Theatre

The Marsh Theatre

1062 Valencia Street San Francisco, CA 94110

Keeping the space intimate and the stage filled with one actor gives The Marsh a big pull with theatre supporters. Performing a show on your own can be scary in itself, but seeing these amazing actors at The Marsh (which also has amazing peasant pies) gives even the shyest of the shy hope in the public speaking dept.

Magic Theatre at Fort Mason

Magic Theatre is all about supporting independent actors and writers. I have yet to be dissapointed when taking a chance on a new play with new actors from a new writer. Everyone has to start somewhere and Magic Theatre is happy to give these “kids” their break into the underbelly of the theatre world.

The Exit Theatre

Exit Theatre

156 Eddy St, San Francisco, CA 94102

Great bar? Check. Exposed brick? Check. Stadium seating? No! I love the Exit for having small tables to set your delicious drinks on. I feel like I’m about to hear jazz instead of watch a play, but the plays never disappoint. And (though unlikely) if a play does disappoint, the Exit has three theatres on site so you can give another show a go.
