Much like an ex-boyfriend, Amoeba and I have a love-hate relationship. I try to stay away, but I always come crawling back…
An independently owned megastore, Amoeba Music caused a huge stir when it first arrived in LA. Lots of my friends used to making a yearly pilgrimage to Berkeley’s location now visit the Los Angeles store three or four times a week. Boasting a huge selection, most everything is reasonably priced as much of the discs and records are used. The many live music shows that they offer are also a key draw.
Amoeba is a musical black hole (once you dive into their ginormous music selection odds are you’ll never make it out again), but it’s also an excellent place for musicphiles to get together. Maybe you’ll pick up a hot DJ in the vinyl section or maybe you’ll run into someone who shares your affinity for 1960s bossa nova. The possibilities are endless…
Got an hour to spare in Hollywood? Make eyes and/or faces at hipper than thou music snobs in this record store Mecca.
iTunes? Are you kidding? I get all my music at this independent superstore in the heart of Hollywood.
On the weekends it is jam packed with jam seekers. The staff is knowledgeable without making you feel like a loser (usually) and sometimes they’ll have killer live (and free!) shows in the back featuring anyone from Aqualung to Paul McCartney. Rad.
The largest independent record store in Southern California – and it is large – right in the heart of Hollywood.

I went to U.C. Berkeley, and I can’t tell you how many hours I spent at Amoeba when I probably should have been studying. Anywho, you can only imagine my excitement when Amoeba opened up an LA outpost a few years back. The parking is atrocious, but the ridiculously large selection (I can spend hours browsing the used music section here) will make you forgot about parking. It will also make you forget where you parked your car.
