Although this was not the site of my “free” walking about, I suggest the Guggenheim for your sneaky cultural pursuits. Why? Because it’s a grown-up museum (everyone is running about being silly in children’s museums), there is modern art on the walls (those Crayola colors are inspiring!) and the circular spiral design of the building is perfect for sauntering and dilly-dallying. It would probably be pretty exhilarating to run away from security by going around in circles 6 times!

The Guggenheim is every modern art lover’s dream. Take a date there and muse on abstract expressionism. Question the aesthetic detail in the work of Frank Gehry. Complain about why the museum’s restaurant serves only Italian espresso. Did you know that the Italians were allied with the Germans during World War II? And who did the Germans obliterate? The Jews. Pure anti-Semitism – and now I’m supposed to appreciate art? Why don’t we just get on a plane and fly to Vietnam; ask them what they think of the new Rolling Stones record. Why are you laughing? Oh, you think this is hilarious?

Rarely does the outside of a museum strike you as much, or more than what’s actually inside, but Frank Lloyd Wright’s cultural masterpiece most definitely does. Its “cylindrical stack” design is a far cry from the the common boxy museum found everywhere.

The design is really conducive to the museum experience in that, you aren’t climbing steps each time you get to another floor, but rather following the winding shape around and around till you get to the top.
