Constructed in the mid-1800s to help defend the San Francisco Bay, the military structure of Fort Point National Historic Site never actually had the chance to take part in any battle. Nonetheless, its Third System military architectural style and presence during many great eras in United States history has given it major significance even today. Historical exhibits and live demonstrations of various pieces of weaponry make a visit to the fort an interesting stop for anyone interested in past military life. The fort sits on the very northern end of the Presidio of San Francisco, beside the southern end of the famed Golden Gate Bridge.
