A museum dedicated to preserving the culture and stories of the local Iñupiat people, the Iñupiat Heritage Center has exhibits and artifacts as well as offering educatoinal classes and performances. One of the most significant contributions of the Iñupiat people was their aid to the commercial whaling industry in the 19th century thanks to their long history of hunting the elusive bowhead whale. Surviving and even thriving in one of the harshest climates ever occupied by people, these local residents have a long history of innovation and endurance. The center is in the isolated town of Barrow, which is located on the very northern tip of Alaska right against the Arctic Ocean.
