Sing Your Heart Out, Philly!
Philly has found it's way into many musical creations, whether in a hysterical, memorable rhyme or a touching ballad. From Boyz II Men, to Bruce Springsteen, and Elton John, the city of brotherly love has everybody singing. Here's Philly's soundtrack and a couple of venues where you can hear the city's sound live and in person.
I was bruised and battered
And I couldn’t tell what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
Saw my reflection in a window
I didn’t know my own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me wasting away
On the streets of Philadelphia
I walked the avenue till my legs felt like stone
I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Just as black and whispering as the rain
On the streets of Philadelphia
Motownphilly back again
Doin’ a little eastcoast swang
Boyz II Men, on the way now
Not too hard, not too soft
[Shawn]
It’s long overdue and now, Philly is slammin’
(Everybody it’s) Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD
The eastcoast family
Never skipped a beat, while coolin’ on South Street
Jet black Benz, plenty of friends
(And all the Philly steaks you can eat)

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said ’You’re movin’ with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air’

Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born I’ve waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee-high to a man
Yeah gave me peace of mind my daddy never had
Oh Philadelphia freedom shine on me, I love you
Shine a light through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine a light shine a light
Shine a light won’t you shine a light
Philadelphia freedom I love you, yes I do
But Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s instrumental theme song has become one with the sounds of Philly.
After you’ve raised your lighter and belted along at your favorite live concert, get ready to stand in line a few blocks down the street to snag one of Jim’s famous cheesesteaks.

In place of the red lamp post, there used to be the gum tree. A large tree that had bark covered in chewed gum. It added attitude to the TLA. It was a said day when they chopped it down.
Philadelphia,
City of brotherly love.
Brotherly love.
Sometimes I think that I know
What love’s all about
And when I see the light
I know I’ll be all right.

" Johnny Brenda’s is a bar, restaurant, and music venue located in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia. The building dates from the late 19th century, and while the performance space has been completely redesigned, it maintains the feel of an elegant, iconic historical social hall with design elements reminiscent of a turn of the century burlesque club or theater.
Featuring a world-class sound system, and a balcony (a rarity for a room it’s size), it is unlike any performance space in Philadelphia, and quite possibly the country."

Don’t let the simple sign fool you. The inside of this tavern boasts some modern, high-tech music amenities.
Just like Philadelphia
Freedom means a lot to me
In between the place I’ve been
And where I’m goin’
I can see America
Tryin’ not to show her age
Even though the winds of change
Keep on blowin’
And I would lay your body down and rock your tears away
But it’s much too late for now to be like yesterday
And the time is running out and we still have to say
Goodbye
Remember Philadelphia
Beyond the killer live music, the Trocadero’s most unique offering is Movie Monday ($3 gets you in & goes towards a drink or snack of your choosing. Plus the bar is open all night.)
