Historically, tattoos signified social status, marked rites of passage, and indicated family ties across various cultures.

Key characteristics of tribal tattoos include bold lines, repetitive designs, distinct elements, and symbolic representations of religion and mythology. Popular choices include Hawaiian floral designs, Indian motifs, alphabet-inspired art, and rose tattoos. Traditional tattoos, rooted in American or Wild West styles, were commonly used by sailors to distinguish themselves. These tattoos typically feature strong black outlines and a limited color palette of red, yellow, and black, with purple added later.

Popular traditional tattoo designs include sparrows, eagles, needles, Native American imagery, hearts, hooks, marine themes, navy and army insignias, blades, roses, and gypsy designs. New school tattoos blend old school and folk art styles, using bold outlines but incorporating a vibrant range of colors, unlike the limited palette of traditional tattoos. They often exaggerate details and embrace a graffiti-inspired aesthetic with fantasy subjects, allowing for significant artistic freedom.

Blackwork tattoos, also known as neo-tribal tattoos, utilize solid black ink. They feature extensive linework, dotwork, large areas of black shading, unique motifs, visual designs, and symmetrical geometric patterns. These tattoos often incorporate simple motifs and symbols, heavily influenced by Polynesian art.

Historically, Polynesian tribes used all-black tattoos to represent identity, ancestry, social status, and beliefs related to combat or religion. The artist’s skill is evident in the intricate detailing. This tattoo style is popular among both men and women.

Illustrative tattoos stand out due to their distinct line quality and style, often resembling marker drawings on the skin. Techniques like dotwork, linework, parallel hatching, stippling, and cross-hatching are used to create specific textures and effects.

Geometric elements are frequently incorporated into illustrative tattoos due to their shared origins and approaches. While unique, adding vibrant colors could enhance the tattoo’s appeal. Understanding the meaning behind a tattoo is crucial for long-term satisfaction.

You know you're going to give your kid a complex if you call them "The Mean Bean" instead of; sweetiepie, sugar face, bear, etc. My nickname stuck- even when I got nicer. AND my affinity for all things BEAN happens to be tremendous; Coffee beans (my coffee feign), Cocoa beans, Vanilla beans, chickpeas (yes, it's a bean), black beans....and so on. As for the "mean" part, depends on which ex-boyfriend you ask. I think I'm super sugary. And no, I will not be writing any guides about beans. Unless I get a special request.
