Go in. Expect no frills whatsoever. Act like you’re ordering from the Soup Nazi. Mind your business. Have a carafe of red wine (you’re going to love it). Observe with fascination the movie-character-like personalities of the people working the grill and behind the bar, sitting AT the bar, and serving your food. Continue to mind your business. A good word to describe Santarpio’s is crusty – and I ain’t talking about the pizza, my friend. I have no idea how long this place has been here, but judging by the age of the typical regular, my guess is that East Boston was actually built around Santarpio’s. Ever seen the Spike Lee movie “Do the Right Thing?” This is the closest to Sal’s you can find in Boston – the decor, the accents, and probably the pizza, which is basically, the closest to New York-style pizza you’ll find north of the GW Bridge.
I could point you to the North End for this one, and that’s indeed a fabulous option. But when it comes to a place that’s raw and unpretentious, you want Santarpio’s. A nothing-special seating area and a total 70’s-vibe bar make up this joint, with a staff that looks and acts straight out of the Godfather. Except they aren’t acting. And, frankly, they don’t care much about what you think of them. The juke box is hidden in the back and probably hasn’t been updated in years, but really, now – all you’ll want to hear singing in this place is Frank Sinatra while you sit and marvel at the people. Oh, and the pizza? Positively. Amazing.
