Sumter (IPA: /ˈsʌm.tə/ or /ˈsʌm.tɚ/) is a city in Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 39,643 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Sumter CountyGR6. It should not be confused with Fort Sumter, which is in Charleston harbor, almost 100 miles away; both are named after General Thomas Sumter.
