Calais is a city in the state of Maine in the United States on the St. Croix River on the border with St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. It is in Washington County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,447 at the 2000 census. Its name is pronounced as callous, not the French-style cal-ayy listen .
