Laurel is a city about 14 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 19,960 at the 2000 census. Laurel is home to a modest horse racetrack, Laurel Racecourse, which is actually in Anne Arundel County. Laurel was also the home of an automobile racetrack decades ago. The city is close to Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory. Laurel is also home to a historic district, including its Main Street.
