Atchison is the largest city and county seat of Atchison County, Kansas. The population was 10,232 at the 2000 census. It is named for the senator David Rice Atchison, and was the original eastern terminus of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad.
Atchison was the birthplace of aviatrix Amelia Earhart. The Amelia Earhart Festival held each July in Atchison annually attracts an estimated 30,000-50,000 people.
