Valparaiso is a city in Porter County, Indiana, USA. The population was 27,428 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Porter CountyGR6. Until 1991 it was the terminal of Amtrak's Calumet commuter service. Established in 1836 as Portersville, it was renamed Valparaiso after Valparaíso, Chile near which the county's namesake David Porter battled in the War of 1812.
