Often it is cheaper to buy more expensive gas that is closer.
Lots of people will drive a long way out of the way to get gas that is one cent cheaper. For a 10 gallon tank, this will save you 10 cents, and for a 20 gallon tank, this will save you 20 cents. Driving one mile costs you 27 cents at 15m/g, 20 cents at 20m/g, 16 cents at 25m/g, 13 cents at 30m/g, and 10 cents at 40m/g. In many cases, this means you will burn more trying to get the cheap gas than you will save on the fill up.
There are many gas saving tips out there.
The one that struck my fancy is concerning gas wasted during idle fuel consumption. Most sources agree that you waste from .5 gallons to 1 gallon of gas per hour idling your engine. And that you use about the same amount of gas idling your engine for 10 to 30 seconds as you use to restart your car. Just don’t turn your car off while in traffic.
