Most of the time it is cheaper to buy more expensive gas closer to home.
Many people will drive a long way out of the way to buy gas that is one cent cheaper. Per one cent cheaper gas, and for a ten gallon tank, this will save you ten cents, and for a twenty gallon tank, this will save you twenty cents. Driving one mile costs you 27 cents at 15m/g, 20 cents at 20m/g, 16 cents at 25m/g, 13 cents at 30m/g, and 10 cents at 40m/g. In many cases, this means you will burn more gas going to get the cheap gas than you will save on the fill up.
There are many gas saving suggestions out there.
The one that struck my fancy is concerning gas wasted idling your engine. Most sources claim that you burn from .5 gallons to 1 gallon of gas per hour idling your engine. And that you use about the same amount of gas idling your engine for 10 to 30 seconds as you use to restart your car. Just don’t turn your car off while in traffic.
