Yes, in the East yoga asana is a deeply traditional, ancient practice with the ultimate goal of longer, deeper meditation. But we're on the West Coast, baby! Which means at least some of what we call asana (yoga poses) becomes about the YOGA BOO-TAY!! Which I don't think is always a bad thing, if you don't fixate on it - women on their own and men on, well, everyone else's. So here's your guide to how your yoga pants can aid you in your pursuit of strong asanas and a tight-looking bum.
Hyde Yoga
MADE OF: Modal! And lycra. One of my favorite semi-sustainable fabrics, modal makes use of paper waste (excess pulp in some paper processes) to compress into a super-soft and durable blend.
FEELS LIKE: A thicker, even softer version of cotton.
FITS LIKE: Mid-waisted (not too low) fit is great for all ages. Cuts are simple with some funky details.
OTHER BENEFITS: Sustainable fiber that lasts over time? Yes, please! Hyde pants are also an extremely reasonable price for the quality.
BOOTY SCALE: 4.5
MINUSES: Some styles (not the ones below) can be a bit of a tricky fit and aren’t as flattering. This is a new line, and there are still some bugs to be worked out!
PRICE POINT: $65 – $68

Lululemon
The big booty winner, these pants really perform during your practice by wicking sweat AND lifting your ass-ets by a good two inches with a combination of clever seaming and ingenious fabric composition.
MADE OF: 88% ish nylon and 12% ish lycra.
FEELS LIKE: a synthetic fabric for sure, but the thickness and slickness is worth it during yoga and for what it does for your shape.
FITS LIKE: Mid- to low- waisted pant that hugs the hips and thighs, then loosens up through the bottom of the leg. There have been boot-cut and straight-leg versions.
OTHER BENEFITS: Great colors and a huge selection of sizes AND lengths. Regular length is about 32" and tall is a whopping 36". If you are somewhere in between, or below a 32", each store offers complimentary hemming! Hard to beat that!
BOOTY SCALE: 9.3
MINUSES: Fabric is nowhere near sustainable. While the company does have some sustainable (reusable shipping bins that they use to ship products to stores, fully recyclable gift wrapping) and socially responsible measures in place, that’s still a lot of synthetic fabric being put out there into the world, and the creation of synthetic fabric uses lots of fossil fuels.

The Groove Pant is said to do wonders for every bum. I think there are girls out there that wear nothing but the Groove Pant every day, and I know that at least 2 full-length songs and 1 rap has been made about them.

The Still Pant is my 2nd favorite style. This is a pant that can actually pass as professional wear when paired with a nicer blouse. Brilliant!

Beyond Yoga
A nice basic yoga line for all ages.
MADE OF: Supplex. I’m not sure what Supplex is exactly, but this is definitely a fabric with lots of synthetic involved.
FEELS LIKE: A very thick, cozy fabric. Not the most breathable but moves with you very well.
FITS LIKE: Mid-waisted and pretty straight-legged. Those interested in baggier styles need not apply.
OTHER BENEFITS: Fabric is immune to snagging and pulling, which you can definitely get with some of the other synthetic brands.
BOOTY SCALE: 5.6
MINUSES: Beyond Yoga color palettes are washed out and boring, so stick to basic black.
PRICE POINT: $82
Original Supplex Pant
OmGirl
OmGirl is a pretty big line; there are a couple of jewels each season but the rest are so-so. The Nomad pant is one of these jewels.
MADE OF: Cotton/lycra blend with a slight fleecing on the inside.
FITS LIKE: Super-wide leg – I mean SUPER. Thin roll down skirt that comes down to the upper thigh.
FEELS LIKE: Drape-y, swingy goodness
OTHER BENEFITS: OmGirl leaves the hem raw, which I think is a little tacky, but this makes it possible to cut pants to the desired length yourself. The fabric will not unravel.
BOOTY SCALE: 4.8
MINUSES: Not a great pant for many types of yoga. It would work for a winter hatha class or restorative class.
PRICE POINT: $70 – $92

I thought twice about including Clary Sage, so consider this one of the nicer things I’ve done for you :).
MADE OF: Organic cotton and lycra blend.
FEELS LIKE: Your favorite pair of sweats: soft and supple
FITS LIKE: This line is all about the design, fit, and detailing. Each piece is made to look handmade, with intricate little lingerie-esque details that leave you feeling sexxxxy. Fit can be body-hugging – better be comfortable with those curves! Those of the beanpole variety are in luck, as the lines and detailing add volume.
OTHER BENEFITS: Hot, hot, hot and makes use of organic cotton.
BOOTY SCALE: 9.2
MINUSES: Since you can order on the interwebz- the geniuses in charge of this line have put it online – you don’t even have to live here in SF to enjoy the fruits of their labor. So honestly, I can’t think of a single one.
PRICE POINT: $68 – $98

Can you say, “smokin’”? These leggings are awesome, and the “seam” comes in several different light shades to match with various tops.

The most booty of them all, this crop is creative seaming and ultimate function. Great for running and other activities as well.

Hardtail Forever
MADE OF: Hardtail pants are a lightweight cotton/lycra blend (90% cotton and 10% lycra for those that care about these things. That’s actually quite a bit of lycra as lycra is expensive and most brands use about 5-6%)
FEELS LIKE: I really love the feel of the fabric as I practice: soft, light, and it moves with you all while not slithering across your skin like synthetics can.
FITS LIKE: Low-waisted, fitted through the leg, and boot-cut. Flattering on everyone.
OTHER BENEFITS: This is a cotton line that keeps its color fairly well after repeated washing. Fold-down waist actually stays put.
MINUSES: With one basic length, those of shorter gams can need hemming while those with the much-sought-after giraffe legs may be sporting “floods”.
Hardtail Classic Bootcut
Though this model looks like she needs a feeding tube, stat, these pants are flattering on all figures.

Their leggings are great, too, with little details that set them apart (be careful of placement, however, as they may chafe in some poses).

Be Present
MADE OF: Breathe-weave, a nylon-based material that stands up to the heat. Though the claims about the fabric is that it has superior wicking, it’s mostly that they are a looser fit and sweat dries quickly anyway when you wear them.
FEELS LIKE: Slippery, stretchy hiking pants.
FITS LIKE: Somewhere between mom jeans and aforementioned hiking pants.
OTHER BENEFITS: Transition easily from the yoga studio to the street; aren’t as revealing and tight as a lot of other pants out there.
BOOTY SCALE: 2.2
MINUSES: Again, a synthetic nylon base. Also can make swish-swish noise during yoga practice or brisk walking.
PRICE POINT: $63 – $81

Be Present offers three lengths in this cut: the Kona is the shortest, then the Mobility, and the Agility is the longest.

Wow, you are a total yoga pant expert!! I don’t really do yoga and am more of a pilates for fun girl. So, I don’t tend to spend tons of money on yoga pants. But I do generally live in the cheaper Victoria’s Secret fold-over version. And when I say live, I mean live!
