Sure, it's dry in Colorado. But that shouldn't stop you from having a killer garden. Here's how to create a gorgeous landscape and still be an environmentally-sound water user.

With water becoming an increasingly scarce resource, particularly in the water-parched west, why contribute to the 50% of residential water use in the U.S. that goes to landscapes? In Colorado’s semi-arid climate, you can reduce water use and maintenance costs by up to 60% by planning a water-smart landscape.

Reducing water usage in your yard doesn’t have to mean rocks and cactus! The principles of xeriscape include creating zones where plantings share the same water usage. Keep a small patch of lawn, and surround it with lush plantings of plants that have low water needs.

Plant Select is a program to popularize and sell plants that do well in Colorado’s varied landscape. Go to the Plant Search option on this website, and you can search for selections that are xeric. Plant Select varieties are sold at lots of Colorado garden centers.

One of the easiest things you can do to reduce your water usage is replace your typical Kentucky Bluegrass with Buffalo Grass, which requires far less water. You’ll be irrigating 3-4 times a month instead of 3-4 times a week. You’ll be mowing less, too! Buffalo Grass requires full sun and a slight downside is that it doesn’t green up until temperatures get warm. Green Valley Turf grows and sells Buffalo Grass sod.

Great selection of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. My favorite local garden center and worth the drive.
