I'm a film junkie. Everything about movies I love. Going to the theater, renting them, watching the previews, talking about them afterwards and the list goes on. I happen to have a very special place in my heart for the art of indie films. For the actors, the cinematography and the story lines. They lend themselves to being more geniune, because they don't have to blow stuff up and have a happy ending to profit, like most blockbusters. Here are some of my favorite, what are yours???
me, You and Everyone we know.
Miranda July not only acts, she produces, directs, and writes. She’s brilliant. This film is quirky, honest and sad all at once. Youtube the scene where she’s filming her feet….
Junebug
BEFORE AMY ADAMS WAS JULIE AND JULIA, she was Junebug. The dialogue is fantastic, hysterical, heartbreaking and beautiful. She absolutely won my heart.
Hannah Takes the Stairs
Greta Gerwig is a filmmaker and actress that you need to watch. She’s honest, real- you almost feel like you shouldn’t be watching the movie because it’s so personal, you feel like you’re spying. It’s fantastic.
The Hottest State
This is one of the most honest stories of love I’ve seen on film in a really long time. It shows all of the ups and downs, all of the confusion and heartbreak….it’s messy and raw.
Rachel Getting Married
Anne Hathaway is a brilliant recovering drug addict in the film, a far cry from her role in Princess Diaries.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
You’ll need a GIGANTIC box of tissues for this one. Two little boys from vastly different backgrounds, one is in a concentration camp and the other’s father is a Nazi….imagine how this one is going to work out….
2 Days in Paris
Julie Delpy is another genius, writer and actress. And she’s French, which naturally makes her more awesome.
Sideways
Everyone wine lover should own this film.
Happy Go Lucky
British accents will make you smile, period. Have you ever had that friend that’s happy. all. the. time. That’s the main character in this movie….and even when you’re irritated by her joy, you realize- maybe there is a lot to be happy about….ah, what a concept.
Garden State
A CLASSIC. With an equally classic soundtrack.
The Secret of Roan Inish
Favorite movie as a kid. But, I was a weird kid.
Fast Food Nation
It’ll definitely make you think twice about grabbing a burger on the way home….
Paris Je'Taime
A compilation of short scenes directed by different directors gives you all of the reasons why it’s so easy to fall in love with Paris, by completely different perspectives. Great film. Apparently they’re coming out with an I Love New York as well….
Waiting for Guffman
“It’s a Zen thing, like how many babies fit in a tire.” I LOVE THIS MOVIE
Slumdog Milliionaire
If you haven’t seen this movie, you’ve been hiding under a rock…..crawl out.
HOW TO BE
Ah, before Robert Pattinson was “the hot one from Twilight” he made indie films where he was the nerdy band kid. And for me, this movie definitly hits close to home. Trying to convince everyone that your music is going to be “HUGE” one day isn’t an easy task…
Lost in Translation
Everyone remembers Scarlett Johansson in this film, in her underwear- yep, I caught you…I know that’s what you were thinking.
Half Nelson
Dear Ryan Gosling, let’s get married. Yes, that’s an official proposal.
The Science of Sleep
A bit trippy….but watching Gael Garcia Bernal is beautiful. Any and all of Michel Gondry’s work (also the director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) is brilliant and innovative.
The Royal Tenenbaums
I don’t know a single hipster that wasn’t in love with this movie.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
A brilliant role for Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. I’ve watched the movie about a hundred time and never get sick of it.
MILK
One of the best films I’ve seen in a long time, Sean Penn is a brilliant actor and the story is incredibly moving.
Nights and Weekends
Another film by Greta Gerwig, she shows the truths about love in a way that we don’t always want to see- relationships aren’t simple and she captures just that.
Saved
Everyone knows I love a good film that pokes a “tad” bit of fun at religion, in the most outrageously funny way possible. Mandy Moore isn’t just a poptart-she’s also an indie movie chick and she’s fantastic.
Land of Plenty
Michelle Williams is the QUEEN of indie films. She’s unafraid to take challenging roles and because of it she continues to grow as an actress, way beyond what we would have imagined after only seeing her on Dawson’s Creek!
The Oh in Ohio
Parker Posey, enough said.
Welcome to the Dollhouse
Very Napolean Dynamite-esque, you can’t help but feel heartbreakingly bad for the main character….oh how I don’t miss my youth.
Paper Heart
I HEART MICHAEL CERA. AND, I cannot WAIT for this movie! ah!
Broken English
One of Parker Posey’s more serious roles, panic attacks and heartbreak- she was fantastic.

The pod of Mother Earth
You know you're going to give your kid a complex if you call them "The Mean Bean" instead of; sweetiepie, sugar face, bear, etc. My nickname stuck- even when I got nicer. AND my affinity for all things BEAN happens to be tremendous; Coffee beans (my coffee feign), Cocoa beans, Vanilla beans, chic...
