I'M COLD and I'm getting blown away as I try to go to and from my destinations. I've spent many Chicago winters here, and let me tell ya, I've grown some thick skin! You want to survive the Windy City? Perhaps you live here... I'm sure you've cultivated your own means of survival. Let me tell ya what I know. Hold on tight, it's windy.

Hold On Tight

Widget_bvvvvbsz9m1q7y3riifpyb

This wind is nothing to mess with here. When it comes a blowin’ you gotta hold on, FOR DEAR LIFE! Especially in the winter. Don’t let go though, or you will blow into Lake Michigan. That wouldn’t be fun, because you might die of hypothermia.

Hold On To Your Children

If you aren’t careful you could lose a few children in the wind. Make sure they hold on tight when a gust of wind approaches. No matter what season it is, they could blow away in a second!

Go Shopping for Canned Goods

Yes, it’s always good to be prepared for a snow in with some canned goods. However, I have found that if you put them in your coat pocket, you have a better chance of not being blown away. Trust me on this one.

It's All About The Boots

If your feet are warm, you have nothing to worry about. Boots will protect you from the harsh snow and ice at your feet. This is particularly crucial when keeping you from slipping and sliding and making a fool of yourself. Stay cool, I mean warm, when out in the cold this winter.

Drink Coffee, Constantly!

This should be the #1 rule to staying warm and grounded in Chicago. If I have a coffee with me at all times, I feel safe, secure, and of course, warm.

Don't Bring An Umbrella

Widget_dptd3q8tti9pkgi-79cphs

There is no point in owning an umbrella in Chicago. I ditched mine a long time ago when I brought mine out on a cold, windy afternoon. It turned inside out and blew right out of my hands. Bye-bye! No point, don’t have one here. Just wear a hat or your coat hood. That’s all you need. Trust me!

Own A Warm Coat

Widget_a4soxjsllpvlhdr8pvufx7

A warm coat is the only way of survival. If your head, torso, feet, and hands are warm, you will be just fine. My first winter in Chicago was almost death when I moved here from Nashville. I was not prepared and almost froze me butt off.

Give Some Hugs

Widget_aexmrffyrd47rupehicr6m

Keep yourself warm with a hug. Whether or not you find a Siberian tiger in Chicago is beside the point. Body heat is a great way to stay warm. We need more love in this world, right?

Take A Load Off

Widget_cjx8bvpfbbh4kvzewlfugv

You may need to take an extra load off your back when the wind is harsh. This may mean throwing away an extra child. This may not be so difficult if you have another one around.

Just Stay Indoors

There is no need to go outside in the wind and cold if you don’t need to. Make a night of staying indoors and warming up. A nice game of bridge or scrabble would be fun!

When Riding The El...

Stay bundled up! The train takes FOREVER to come, so just prepare yourself with that warm coat. Otherwise, you will be climbing up to the heat lamps located on the El platform, and those shut off about every 10 minutes or so. Then you would have to climb down and turn them on again.

I am not loyal to any one place that serves up coffee. I like to hop around from place to place until I have found the perfect cup of coffee, or at least until my heart gives out. I love to poke fun at people, places, and circumstance. You can be a Coffee Slut too. Let's chat over a cup...
