Drink Like a Man (or an Awesome Woman)

Anyone can go to a bar. Anyone can get drunk on vodka tonics, cosmos, or long island iced teas. But it takes a stronger drinker to find and appreciate a solid whiskey bar. It takes an even stronger drinker to appreciate the whiskey while continuing to get hammered. I, my friends, am that drinker and I'm here to help you follow in my liver's footsteps through the streets of San Francisco.

Nihon

1779 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA 94103

The Nihon Whiskey Lounge is a great place for experienced and virgin whiskey drinkers. I just stopped in here this past week to choose from their 450+ whiskey selection. From bottles in the $4,000 dollar range to $5 per glass happy hour, everyone’s budget will fit here. But in the sake of full disclosure, make sure you keep track of the orders as I’ve been known not to do. The bill adds up fast.

Get the tempura shiitake stuffed mushrooms. Holy F!

The Broken Record

1166 Geneva Ave, San Francisco, CA 94112

The Broken Record is close to number one on my list of whiskey bars. Aside from a huge selection of whiskey and a bartender who is eager to give you some whiskey education, The Broken Record has one of the best burgers in San Francisco. So go for the drinks, stay for the food, go back to become a regular.

The prawn sandwich or burger can do no wrong.

Whiskey Thieves

839 Geary St, San Francisco, CA 94109

Whiskey Thieves boasts a large collection of Irish Whiskey, Scotch and Bourbon just waiting for you behind the bar. But even with the lure of great libations, be prepared to squeeze through a crowd of hipsters (click here to get dressed hipster style). If you can stand the younger crowd and gratuitous PDA’s, then prepare to fall in love with this dive.

Unlike Nihon, you can get out of Whiskey Thieves with a small bill. Just stick to Makers Mark and Knob Creek instead of the higher end bottles. Whiskey is whiskey once it’s in the glass.

Bourbon & Branch

501 Jones Street, San Francisco, CA 94102

Mmmmmmmm. I love me some Bourbon & Branch. Seriously, what is better than a speakeasy establishment that requires a reservation? This is not a big place or a noisy place. This is a serious whiskey place with a small stock and amazing drinks. As long as you abide by the eight rules, you’ll have a new secret spot in SF. And by secret I definitely mean secret. I’ve given you the address, but you’ll have to take a leap of faith on entering this place.

Walk softly, drink heavily.

So let’s say you really want to go to Bourbon & Branch, but they are booked up. No worries my fellow whiskey hound. Attached to Bourbon & Branch is a hidden bar that does not require reservations. It does however require you to knock on a secret door and give the correct password (I’m not making this up). The Library is a great throwback to prohibition and a great place to drop in without a reservation. So like its parent Bourbon & Branch, be prepared for a search and be sure you know the password.

Not as easy to find as you think.

Alembic the

1725 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117

The Alembic is a whiskey bar for people who don’t just want whiskey. Although their whiskey selection is extensive, you’re non-whiskey drinking friends (who really shouldn’t be your friends anyway) will be able to get their cranberry cocktails while watching in awe as you pound whiskey like the Duke.

With well over 100 whiskeys you’ll have no trouble feeling right at home.

Rickhouse

246 Kearny St, San Francisco, CA 94108

Rickhouse is another fully stocked bar, but that includes a major selection of all things whiskey. This bar is not somewhere you’ll be able to have an intimate evening. This bar is somewhere that college boys will congregate to scout out cute girls in the packed floor. The decor is great, the drinks are great, the crowd… not so much.

Now even though I’m not always feeling the crowd, it may be just what you’re looking for.

Rye

688 Geary St, San Francisco, CA

Rye likes to compliment their great whiskey selection with an assortment of cocktails. This assortment includes absinthe. So for the adventurous drinkers, be sure to check out the Sazerac that combines rye whiskey and absinthe. I promise you won’t be disappointed. And if you are disappointed hopefully that drink will wipe all memory of this guide from your system.

I can’t vouch for Marilyn Manson ever gracing Rye with his menacing presence, but based on his love of absinthe I wouldn’t call it a stretch.
