While In-N-Out is always tasty, sometimes you're craving something more in a burger (last time we checked In-N-Out didn't offer gruyere cheese as a topping). So for those times when a trip to the drive-thru just won't cut it (or those times you don't feel like eating behind the wheel of your car), here are some burgers that just might make you want to give up fast food FOREVER.

Father's Office

1018 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403

Many tout the Father’s Office burger as being the best in LA. But if you’re expecting a traditional ketchup-soaked patty on a sesame bun with pickles, you might be disappointed. The FO version is more like a steak sandwich than a burger. The aged beef comes dressed with bacon, arugula, gruyere, and blue cheese atop a crusty roll, which is then cut in half. Traditional? No. Worth waiting half an hour in line for? Yes.

Lucky Devils

6613 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028

Owned by the former “Diet Coke Hunk” (you remember those commercials from the ‘90s), Lucky Devils’ burgers don’t run cheap (just under $20). But when your Kobe Beef burger arrives overflowing with cheese and carmelized onions, you’ll lick your fingers and forget how much it costs.

Oinkster the

2005 Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90041

The Oinkster is chef Andre Guerrero’s foray into “slow fast food” (Guerrero also owns Max and Senor Fred in Sherman Oaks). The burgers aim to compete with those so-called gourmet versions without setting you back $24. And at $5 a pop, the Oinkster burger is the most affordably mouthwatering way to get your beef fix.

The Bowery

6268 W SUNSET BLVD LOS ANGELES, CA 90028

Hollywood’s The Bowery (a culinary love letter to New York City), offers a well-priced burger that rivals Father’s Office. Served on an English muffin, the burger can be dressed up with bacon, grilled onions, cooked mushrooms, gruyere, and/or blue cheese—but the toppings will cost ya extra.

Whatever happened to the Hamburglar?

The Blue Velvet Restaurant

750 GARLAND AVE LOS ANGELES, CA 90017

The Apple Pan

10801 W PICO BLVD LOS ANGELES, CA 90064

This joint might just be older than LA itself (the staff can tell you stories about what LA was like pre-Paris Hilton). The menu here is small which makes it easy: Order a steak burger with Tillamook cheddar cheese (the hickory version is good if you like your burger with bbq sauce), and pie for dessert. The apple pie ala mode isn’t bad, but if you’re looking for a real treat, go for the banana cream.

Ford's Filling Station

9531 Culver Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232

Owned by the chef son of Harrison Ford, Ford’s is a classy gastropub featuring gourmet takes on traditional pub food. The Pub Burger comes with blue cheese and is totally delicious. And since it’s one of the cheaper items on the menu, you’ll be one happy camper.

The Counter

2901 Ocean Park Blvd Ste 102, Santa Monica, CA 90405

The Counter might not be a good idea if you’re on the indecisive side: The restaurant offers a set menu as well as the option to build your own burger with a variety of toppings, cheeses, and sauces. If having to decide between gruyere, fried egg, and dried cranberry toppings makes you break out in a sweat, it might be a good idea to play it safe and go traditional.
