Community Where to find the best Halloween costumes in SF

Finding original Halloween costumes has never been an easy chore—that's because this city is full of freaks that wear costumes day in and day out. If you're looking for more than just tutus and fairy wings, skip Haight Street this year and try thrifty stores over the traditional pop-up costume shops.

Out of the Closet Thrift Store

1498 Polk St, San Francisco, CA 94109

Out of the Closet is a funny place, and not just this one, but all three of their SF locations. Much of the year, they focus on basics and graphic tees, but around Halloween they begin to get it strange household items, interesting fashions, and plenty of random what-do-you-do-with-these. Prices can be bargain-basement cheap, so grab a bunch of whatcha-ma-call-its and construct something creative.

Thrift Town

2101 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110

Thirft Town is stocked to the brim with random stuff. Once in awhile, you can score on great vintage garb, but for Halloween its a treasure trove of props and colorful costume gear. Beware: you might have to dig before you hit gold, but don’t be discouraged. Hard work at Thrift Town will pay off when you wow others with your inspiring (not to mention, economical) ensemble.

Costumeparty!

1058 Hyde St, San Francisco, CA 94109

Definitely the pricier option of the bunch, but many of their accessories and clothing items may be used more than just once – except for those aviator goggles and maybe that red sequin dress so short you couldn’t sit down last year. Anyways, CostumeParty! has incredible pieces from the 50s, 60s, and beyond, plus an impressive assortment of costume jewelry. But do know this: you better not talk on your cellphone in there or the old guys will kick you out right then and there.
