Where To Celebrate Birthdays in Los Angeles
Every fall I think to myself hmmm.... where am I going to celebrate my birthday this year? It can be a pretty agonizing decision and if you're anything like me you'll change your mind about 12 times before finally settling on a place. So, I'm going to take some of the agony out of the decision-making process and suggest some places for a birthday dinner.
Gardens of Taxco
1113 N Harper Ave. West Hollywood, CA 90046
I went here a couple years back for a birthday and it was pretty fun. The servers are a total trip. There aren’t any menus so they tell you what you can order— just wait for the description of a particular chicken dish where they tell you how the chicken is “born in the sauce.” The atmosphere is pretty festive and they have an awesome mariachi band with a pretty funny sense of humor. When I was there the band played “Hava Nagila” for our table.

I had the Carne Asade (pictured) when I was here and it was pretty delish. Even if the beef wasn’t born in the sauce.
After coming here to see a friend’s band a while ago, I thought this would be an awesome place to have a birthday party. I’d totally want to get a bunch of friends together, order a slew of tapas and wine, and take over the patio.

If you’re looking for something a tad different, then you might want to book a table at this fondue restaurant. I’m not one for the whole melted cheese thing, but dipping things in chocolate usually goes over pretty well with people.

I came here for my brother’s birthday a couple years ago and it was a great choice. The restaurant was able to fit a pretty large group of people and there’s even live music. To make things ever easier, you can even get a family-style dinner. The food is probably better at Papa Cristos, but the ambiance here is a bit nicer.

Just Desserts
The economy’s not doing so hot right now, which means people are cutting back. If you don’t want to impose on people by making them shell out for your birthday dinner, then you should consider skipping dinner and just going straight to dessert. Birthdays are all about the cake anyway, right? If you’re heading out for some sweet treats you might want to choose somewhere with a nightlife aesthetic. Restaurants like Citizen Smith, Magnolia, and Simon LA are some good choices.
If you’re looking to celebrate your birthday over margaritas and don’t want to compromise your invitation list, then get a table at El Cholo. The restaurant is large enough to accommodate a big party, so you can munch on the delicious tamales without having to leave anyone out. Just be aware, I have been to El Cholo many a time to find out that they only serve tamales during the summer months (around May to October), so be advised!

To Pay or Not to Pay?
Most likely your friends are going to want to treat you for your birthday. If you’re a saint and want to help make a dent in the bill, but your friends aren’t listening to your pleas, then get ready to negotiate. Tell them you’ll cover the tax and tip, or that you’ll buy the 2 bottles of wine your party plowed through during the meal. To avoid any post-dinner arguments about the bill, consider bringing a bottle of wine or two for your party to imbibe in during dinner. You can tell everyone you got them for your birthday and want to share the drunken wealth.
Now I feel like I’m getting to that age where a crazy birthday party in a loud bar just isn’t my thing anymore. What’s great about Fritto Misto is that the food is awesome (and totally reasonable) and they’re able to accommodate fairly big groups even though the restaurant isn’t huge. I went to a small birthday dinner here, but I definitely a couple of big groups celebrating birthdays on the same night. If you’re looking to drink a couple of bottles of vino with your closest friends and actually want to hear what everyone is saying, then you should seriously consider this Italian gem.

Fritto Misto
The restaurant’s namesake dish. A perfect appetizer to share with your group!
C&O is a great place for groups (good size portions, decent prices) if you’re planning on celebrating your birthday with a posse of friends. It’s pretty good Italian food— just try not to overstuff yourself with their garlic rolls before the food comes, those things are more addictive than crack cocaine! Oh, and come ready to sing.

I had my birthday here a couple years ago and it was a great place to celebrate. I had a big group of people and was worried they weren’t going to take my reservation since it was only a couple days before, but they took it! The food is yum-o (and easily shared if you want to go tapas style), and the sangria is tasty— all in all it was a pretty good place for a birthday.

Cha Cha Cha
Things I love at Cha Cha Cha: Jerk chicken, banana boats, goat cheese quesadilla, and of course the plantains!
Bar or Restaurant?
Every year I have this quandary. Do I have my birthday get-together at a bar or a restaurant? Either can be a good choice. A bar is good idea in case your friends are on a budget and don’t want to drop 30 dollars on dinner. But on the other hand, cover charges and high drink prices can add up as well. Another factor is noise level. I had my birthday a pretty noisy bar one year and totally regretted it. I couldn’t hear anybody and it was totally frustrating, But you should be aware that some restaurant can also get pretty high on the decibel scale. In conclusion, bars can be just as good as restaurants, just make sure to check out cover charges, and make sure there’s enough room in the bar for your party— nobody likes to get squished.
This Cal-Mex spot is a good place to go if you’re looking for a nightlifey atmosphere for your birthday dinner. The bar area is usually pretty hopping on weekend nights and the restaurant also has DJ sets on some nights. I really like the food here— it’s not traditional Mexican fare, but it’s a fresh take on old favorites. If you’re celebrating a milestone birthday and want to invite everyone you know and their mother, the restaurant has a private room upstairs. I came here for my birthday several years ago, and if I’m remembering correctly I think they gave me free birthday flan…

A taste of wait awaits at Border Grill!
Want to do something a little more special for your birthday? Then think about going to a Moroccan restaurant like Dar Maghreb. Not only will you be able to chow on delicious things like tagines and couscous, but you’ll be able to shake your hips with the resident belly dancer.

My friends and I all love this wacked-out sushi bar in North Hollywood. It’s the perfect place for a raucous, drunken birthday if that’s what you’re after. The sushi isn’t bad, but it’s not Nobu either. But you don’t come here for the rolls, you come here for the insane birthday fun that is Tokyo Delves.

I told you it was a party at this place…
