What makes a scary movie scary?

Everyone is afraid of something whether it be a man with knives as fingers, a demonic doll, or a man-eating shark. I'm curious what makes a movie scary. Is it the blood and gore? The fact that something like that could really happen to Happyville, USA? What makes you hide behind your bucket of popcorn or sleep with the lights on? What is your all-time favorite scary movie?
I hate to admit it, but...
White Noise scared the bejeebus out of me. The last 30 minutes or so were just okay. But this is the only movie in which I attempted to hide behind my bag of Twizzlers. Upon returning to my dark house, I made sure to turn off my laptop and unplug it for the night.
I don’t know what it is about this movie that creeps me out.
The Sound
When I’m watching a scary movie at home and I’m not in the mood to be scared, I turn off the sound. It amazing what the sound does in those movies to make them scary.
No suspenseful music and you have no idea that a cat is about to leap out at the victim.
basket cases
half a brother separates from other in basket eating hottest dogs. basket case. most scary.
The Shining. It is one of the only movies to ever creep me out. It wasn’t just the hallucinations or rivers of blood. No, the slow progress into insanity and madness is what got me.
Alien
Another great one that is among my favs. Let’s see: space, cool human-killing aliens, face-suckers, Sigourney Weaver, a cat. Yeah. Just blood-curdling and amazing.
The Suspense
Weirdly enough, good horror and good comedy are not unlike each other – everything is in the tension. In comedy, you can’t help but laugh. In horror, you scream. Because you will possibly die. Suspense is everything – the true impending sense of doom that awaits all of our characters. You want good horror? Watch Halloween. That truly is a work of art when it comes to suspense.
The only film i’ve ever seen that has truly scared me witless. I don’t know why, I see no rhyme or reason for it, but I still can’t watch it.
Boston.com shared its list of the top 50 scariest horror movies of all time. Do you agree?
Alternatively titled “Seriously?” These movies may have been frightening back in 1960 or 1970, but when held up to the standards of 2008, they just don’t cut it.
Audition
Suspense is the only thing that makes gore scary. If the movie doesn’t get into your head, it loses. Takashi Miike is really good at shock value, and at the same time getting into your head.
Nightmare On Elm Street
This will always be my favorite classic horror movie. Freddy Kruger haunted me all through my childhood. For the longest time I was convinced he lived in a friend’s boiler room.
The fact that Michael Bay is looking to re-do it frightens me more so than the movie did!
Clowns are scary
This Stephen King Movie is super scary. After watching this movie when I was a kid, I would freak out walking by rain gutters, I thought for sure a clown arm was going to come up and snatch me!
I’m obviously still scared of this clown, because I’m freaking out just downloading this movie poster on to my computer.
Jaws
One of my favorite films, along with being one of my favorite horror movies (is it really horror, though?). Anyway, I love the suspense in this one. The allegory of man vs. nature. And that first moment when the skinny dipper gets it. Chilling and awesome – at the same time.
Friday the 13th
I grew up, reluctantly, watching scary movies during weekly sleepovers at my best friend Brenna’s house.
In between gushing over Simon LeBon of Duran Duran, we’d pop a horror film into the VCR and be freaked out for the rest of the night. Jason and his damn Crystal Lake antics were the worst of the bunch.

"Sometimes dead is better"
Definitely – one of the most frightening, disturbing movies ever…..“Pet Sematary”.
This is one of those movies I watch partially with my hands over my eyes.
Send chills down my spine every time!
The Descent
I watched this for the first time in my friend’s semi-finished basement. NOT a good place to watch a movie set in a cave. This movie is seriously the freakiest movie EVER!!
