What to do When You Take a Paycut

Recession. Its such an ugly word but its affecting everyone it seems, even here in NYC where people always think nothing can touch them. I recently took a 20% paycut and reduced hours and while having a 4 day work week rocks my socks clear off, my paycheck certainly does not. How does one survive NYC on reduced pay when we're already living paycheck to paycheck?

Brunch is quintessential for every New Yorker; I know for me a sunday is just not complete without a trip to Sushi Samba, Stanton Social or my local favorite Fetch to sit outside and eat a concoction of eggs, sausage and best of all: mimosas and bellinis. The problem with brunch is that its pricey. Sushi Samba will charge you 30 bucks, and that doesn’t include your drinks! When you’re on a stricter budget than normal, brunch just isn’t feasible.

Or is it?

I’ve allowed myself, in my budget, to take one big brunch a month at a restaurant of my choice, to just treat myself. That doesn’t mean I’m sitting home every sunday though!

Why not gather some friends, cook up various breakfast goods and head to the park? That way you’re still outside, you’re still recapping the nights debauchery with friends and best of all, you’re only paying a fraction of what you would pay at your favorite eatery.

Movie Date....in the Morning

Going to the movies has already become a major expense and the $13 per ticket you’ll spend going to see that new Zack Efron movie isn’t going to fly with my paycheck. Luckily, I’ve discovered that some of my nearby movie theaters are offering deals for Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings before noon. Suddenly that $13 per ticket is now a dollar more than what you’d pay for two! That’s right, $6 per ticket before noon is almost a steal, especially when you have all friday morning to do whatever you’d like.

I'm the author of This? Is Not the Life I Ordered and a wanna be writer. I have a love/hate relationship with NYC and dream of the day I can run away to the mountains. For now, I travel even if I don't have the means to, I go 80 blocks to get cheaper groceries, I have more unread books on my book...
