A Wannabe Foodie's Guide to Becoming a Foodie
There are people that can go to a restaurant and order the most obscure thing on the menu and then there are those that always play it safe. I tend to fall in the middle - when I do take the adventurous leap my taste buds seem to fail me. To me, foodwise, there is nothing worse than putting yourself out there at a restaurant, ordering something new and hating it. You take the first few bites quickly, trying to convince yourself that the true flavor will reveal itself in time. Then you begin to slow down, chugging your drink because you feel like you need to be doing something, if not eating. Finally, your plate is only half empty when everyone else at the table is finished with their meal and onto dessert. The waitress or waiter stops by and asks you if something is wrong and you try to play it off that you weren't as hungry as you thought, because you fear that feelings will be hurt. I fall into the same place with cooking. I am the kind of person that wants to love to cook because I do very much love food, but at the end of the day, my efforts fail more often than not and it only makes me discouraged. As a person who wants to become more knowledgeable and appreciative of the wonderful foods that are out there, I have decided that there are steps one can take to get on the path to becoming a full fledged foodie. I have begun to take them and believe I am on my way, but I would love your input, especially if you share the same goal or better yet, are already there...
Watch the Food Network
The best inspiration can always be found by watching the experts create amazing meals from start to finish. My favorites are Giada and Tyler.
Learn About Your Food
Knowing there is a story or a history behind what you are eating definitely enhances your appreciation. Quinoa, for example, was cooked eight to nine thousand years ago and it is still eaten today. One night I bought a box that only took 15 minutes to make.
Hit up a Buffet
I used to hate sushi. It was mostly because ordering it was intimidating and all the selections were daunting. Sushi is hard to get into because if you were to go through the menu trying to find out exactly what you like, you end up throwing away a lot of money.
The best thing I ever did to remedy this situation was going to an all-you-can-eat buffet, with friends that knew what they were talking about. If I selected I roll I didn’t like, chances were, one of my friends would and the food wouldn’t go to waste. And if I did like it, I was one step closer to becoming a sushi lover.
I wouldn’t say that Minado is the ultimate place to go for the best sushi in the greater Boston area, but I would say that if you haven’t quite figured out sushi – this is a great place to start. They have a lunch and dinner buffet everyday that includes an array of sushi and alternatives if you never really jump on the bandwagon. Either way, you will walk out both full and satisfied.

Dine with Foodie Friends
I have friends that have a distinct knowledge and appreciation for all kinds of food. They are fearless when perusing a menu and can almost always find the good in every dish. When I go out to eat with them, I learn more and more about food. And if I don’t have the courage to order something new, they are always open to sharing.
The deals that restaurants participating in this glorious week are the perfect incentive to try out a new place. Boston just kicked off their week, taking place on Aug 9-14 & 16-21, 2009.
Read Food Blogs
There are so many talented and creative food bloggers out there, all touting their very own recipes, reviewing local restaurants, enlightening their readers on the finest cuisine, and following them is my favorite way to get inspired.
The recipes at We Are Not Martha will not only inspire you to cook, they will convince you to invite all of your friends over for a party to enjoy.
Shannalee’s food creations are almost as beautiful are her writing. Here, you will find honest and delicious recipes. She has even convinced me to start baking.
Maris at In Good Taste has a recipe for almost every occasion. My favorite are her “worknight dinner recipes.”
