If there's one thing I'm absolutely fabulous at it's wasting time. There are many days I look at the clock and think "OMG where did the day go???" and "What have I been doing all day???" And here it is.
I work from home, so I have the glorious advantage of doing what I want when I want. Which means I have all the opportunity in the world to waste time. And waste time I do. Please join me in wasting time. Please?
Working Out
I probably spend way too much time working out, but working out is important, right? And it’s always a great excuse for me to get away from my work and do something else. Plus, the gym really energizes, right? Actually, I’m usually pretty dead tired when I get home from the gym, but whatever.
The gym is actually an even bigger time-waster when you consider how lon it takes to get ready to go, actually work out, and then come home and shower. But at least I’m in shape. Kind of.
Sometimes I wish I had co-workers. Then we could waste time together. Looks like fun to me.
Hanging in the Neighborhood
There’s a lot going on in my neighborhood and a lot to do on a daily basis (stores, coffee shops, etc!), so when I feel like wasting some time, all I have to do is step outside and there’s plenty for me to do. Good? Bad? You decide.
Really, I go to Peet’s to do work. Go me, right? Well, sometimes. Sometimes instead of working at Peet’s, I sit with my coffee and spend 3 hours trying to get the wireless Internet to work. In all fairness, it’s usually perfectly fine. But there are some very frustrating days where the signal just won’t come in. And I get zero work done.
And then there are some days where the people-watching is just way too good!

I’ll just run into Trader Joe’s on my way home from the gym! Right, OK. Running into Trader Joe’s is far more difficult than it sounds. First of all, the place is packed day and night; there is absolutely no good time to go (but you really, really need to stay away from the hours of 5-8 and all weekends).
Even if you can beat the crowds, you’re going to spend way too long browsing all the new products and fun stuff. There’s always something new and fun to be found at Trader Joe’s. And somehow, I find myself needing to go here pretty much everyday!

No matter the day, there is ALWAYS something I need at CVS. But I can’t just run in and out. I need to browse the store to see if any of my essentials are on sale. If time is money, then I am definitely losing money. Shucks.

Shelves and shelves of everything at CVS. OK, so this is the antacid aisle, which I don’t frequent all too often, but still, look at all the options! You could spend all day in here!
Waste Time With Me
And then I won’t feel quite so bad about myself. Seriously, there’s just so much to do and not enough time to do it in. But I try anyway. And you should try too.
Walking
I’m not a big fan of the T. Yes, I know the T is an efficient way of traveling around the city. More efficient than walking at least. But I would much rather walk everywhere. So, if I have errands to run anywhere in Boston proper (which is quite often), I choose to walk. And this eats up quite a bit of time. But keeps me in great shape, so I’m OK with it. I know, I’m already in shape from the gym, but a little more shape can’t hurt, K?
Well, duh. Who couldn’t spend all day in here? I generally try to figure out what books I want ahead of time and then put them on reserve so I can just run in and out. But this doesn’t always happen. You never know what you’re going to find if you walk around for a while (besides gross homeless men snoring in the corners) and sometimes I just can’t help myself.

Spending all day at the BPL is like a dream come true to me!
Sure I have Marshall’s and TJ Maxx’s closer to where I live, but the ones right downtown are so much better, I can’t waste my time browsing the not so great stores. So I head downtown and check out the goods here. Nothing wrong with that, right?

Oh, Macy’s. It seems like I always need to go to you, but you’re not located very closely to me. If I cared to take the T, it wouldn’t be so bad. But I don’t, so I walk. And then you become an all day trip. However, downtown crossing is always a fabulous place for a girl to hang out during lunch time. Trust me.

Shopping at Macy’s makes me giddy, but is probably the opposite of what I should be doing on a work day. Oops.
If I worked in an office, then I could do things like this. And this looks like an absolutely fabulous way to waste time at work.
Talking on the Phone
When you work from home, you become instant therapist. See, not many people are available to talk on the phone at all hours of the day because they’re spending their week days in an office. I, however, can talk to anyone at any time (so long as I’m not at the gym). So, if one of my friends is having a problem or just needs to chat, they know I’m around and will most likely answer, so they call me.
And while I find these distractions very welcome, sometimes I realized I’ve eaten up half my day chatting on the phone.
Browsing Tumblr
Tumblr is a blogging platform that users tend to update all day long (causing me to wonder if people with office jobs even work). The thing with Tumblr is that it constantly tells me how many posts I need to read and I am constantly checking it to see what I’m missing. Then I spend a whole bunch of time looking for things to post on Tumblr. And then people post links that I get sucked into clicking on. And it goes on and on all day. And even at night I wonder what I’m missing on Tumblr.
See? Tumblr is basically the devil, but it’s oh so much fun. And I feel so much more informed because of it.
