What to do on Election Night in Chicago
This election has almost everyone stressed out. My aunt's blood pressure is a "you betcha" away from sky rocketing. Many restaurants and businesses in Chicago have election night deals going on. Take advantage of them as well as these other stress-reduction tips.
Treat Yourself
I need some time away from TV, radio, Internet and newspapers. It’s getting to the point that if I hear one more thing about this election, I might scream. A massage would be a nice treat for my politically-abused body. After I vote of course – it doesn’t make much sense to get all relaxed only to stand in a two-hour line full of political debaters while waiting to cast my ballot.
The Peninsula Spa
108 E. Superior Street Chicago, IL 60611
You’re worth it. Tuesday is not the day to skimp on pampering. Schedule a massage a couple hours after you plan to vote. If anything, it will take your mind off of the election for about an hour. Your muscles will thank you.
Sign up for a yoga class, a facial or acupuncture at Exhale Spa. This urban oasis offers a plethora of pampering options. Try one of their core fusion classes – not only are you de-stressing, but you’re increasing your energy and looking good while doing it!

Aspire to perspire!
If you’re looking for CHANGE, go to the gym! If you don’t already have a membership, use this as an opportunity to join or find a friend and go as their guest. There’s no better way to get rid of the anxiety and frustration than going to the gym and walking, running or punching it out!

Completely ignore it!
Distract yourself with an unpolitical movie. We’re burnt out. We spent the last year listening to maverick-this and change-that. A break is well-deserved and needed. Go check out a new movie – the best thing about week nights is that most theaters aren’t crowded. If you don’t feel like heading out, make it a Blockbuster night and curl up with your man or lady friend. Completely ignore the political drama and get sucked into someone else’s!
Laughter is the best medicine
Funny hats. Hilarious 99.2% of the time. Grab a bunch of your friends and head to the store. Try on random hats and try to come up with the most ridiculous look. I guarantee laughter will ensue.
A little pick-me-up
Starbucks is giving away free coffee to voters. According to a Starbucks spokeswoman, “Simply vote, and ask your barista for a tall cup of brewed coffee at no charge (limit one per customer). In the best tradition of democracy, we’re using the honor system so absentee voters shouldn’t have a problem.”
Go to the website and type in your address to find participating Ben & Jerry’s near you!
Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme will offer all customers sporting an “I Voted” sticker a FREE star-shaped doughnut with patriotic sprinkles.
After selecting your choice on the ballot, select your choice on the menu!

Do a good deed
Create change within your own community and volunteer your time to help those who need it.
Last year I volunteered at Children’s Memorial Hospital and I can’t remember a time when a smile on a kid’s face made me feel so happy.

The simple things
My roommate said the best part about election day is getting the “I Voted” sticker. It’s not quite as cool as the “I gave blood sticker” because no where on it does it tell people to be nice to you. But you should feel good knowing you helped make a difference!
