This is a growing resource of information about Hawaii. I grew up in Honolulu in the 1950s and I return with my family every year. Feel free to jump in and add to this.

Queen Kapiolani

Widget_brcwalsi5o1lxbk2m4v6dv

This statue is by the Band Stand in Kapiolani Park. Oueen Kapiolani was the wife of King Kalakaua, who was the Hawaiian Monarch who made a world tour, bringing many immigrant laborors back to the islands to work the sugar cane and pineapple fields. When my mom and dad were young newly weds, and when I was a baby, the family would go to Kapiolani Park to listen to concerts at the Band Stand. Kapiolani is at the east end of Waikiki, at the base of Diamond Head.

We always ask for a room on the 7th or 8th floor, room 710 or 810. This is part of the viev looking to the west.

The beach below is Kaimana Beach and is a favorite of locals. Kaimana Hila means Diamond Head and the name of a very popular Hawaiian song.

As you continue up Diamond Head Road, you will find a nice community garden maintained by the locals. Pictured with me is Gilbert. I just met him that day but we shared stories of Hawaii before we continued our walk.

Pearl Harbor Survivors

My Mom and Dad were both at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Pop dictated his story to my wife Jjanie on December 7, 1991 on the 50th Anniversary of the Bombing of Pearl Harbor. Go to the link and click on Pearl Story.

Diamond Head is a special place. There is a certain energy around it. Take time to drive from Kalakaua Avenue to Diamond Head Road and around through the Kahala Area, to Hanama Bay, by the Blow Hole, and all the way out to Waimanalo (stopping to look out to Rabbit Island), than take the Pali Drive from Kailua back over to Honolulu.

When I was a boy and friends and relatives visited us from the Mainland, one of the drives we would take was this one…and we would stop at the banana stands on the Pali and enjoy a few different varieties of bananas.

Foster Village

1523 LEHIA ST HONOLULU, HI 96818

Foster Village was a single family community built in the mid to late 1950s by Castro Contracting. It is located right across Salt Lake Blvd from Radford High School (Rams). The homes are built on slabs, single wall construction, no heating sytems, and carports instead of garages. As my grandfather said to my dad and mom in 1958: “Why would anyone pay $20,000 for this?”
