The Death Of The VHS- Remember These?
I would just like to press pause, rewind and have a moment of silence for the VHS tape.... Ok, thanks. We no longer have a place in this modern world for the Video Home System known as, the VHS. Oh so popular in every household in the 80's and 90's. I would hope that they will be remembered for eternity. Yet, their destiny is becoming similar to that of the 8-track, which are very difficult to find these days. This guide is in tribute to the VHS tape and to the memories left on them.
An Ancient Playing Device
Yes, this large brown box used to play movies. This is one of the first VHS players from the 80’s. We had one of these growing up, until the new and improved ones came out in the 90’s. Maybe you remember them?
What To Do With Your VHS Players
- Make them into plant holders by gutting out the inside parts
- Sell the parts
- Give it to your children to play with and call it “a time machine”
- Sell it to an antique shop
- Use them as book shelves by mounting them on the wall.
- Keep them around so that when your great great grandchildren grow up, they can show the VHS player their children and their children’s children.
- Keep it warm until you decide what to do with it.
- Give it a little sunlight to keep it happy.
Neglected and Abused
Thousands upon thousands of VHS players can be found in land fills and in thrift stores. I guess people still use these, but not for long.
High Maintenance
If the movie you were watching stopped, unspooled, or was stuck in a spot, you had to take it out, turn the circles in either direction, or just take it apart to examine the problem. Yes, it was a hassle, but oh how I miss thee…
VHS and DVD Combined!
Half DVD, half VHS, this device plays both, plus records your VHS tapes onto DVDs. Yes, I have just now discovered this. Too bad DVDs will be extinct soon as well.
What Do I Do With Them?
Once I have recorded them all onto DVDs, then what? Sell them all? I can’t give them away! That is part of my pack rat nature… it’s memories!
I have so many just sitting around my apartment. Plus thousands more at my parents house. I guess I could just save them until they are worth something one day. If that ever happens.
Home Videos
My entire childhood is captured on VHS. I remember the camera in my face as a small child and my dad running around, moving the chord out of the way that was attached to it.
He also had an exterior microphone that he would forget to turn on. So some of our memories are captured in silence.
Foreign Recording Device
This is all of the gear that one had to carry around in order to capture life in action. A large suitcase, type storage box was necessary to load all of it around in.
I remember my dad taking the camera from one recital and graduation to the next. It was always a process to pack and unpack all of the essential parts and cords. Sometimes we would forget to put a cord in and we were screwed…. no recording tonight!
Words To Remember and Never Forget..
- VHS
- Rewind
- Fast forward
- Tape
- Video
- Cinching- When the tape folds over on itself
- Dropout- Tape head clog
- Popped Strand- Ya know, that annoying thing that happened when the tape comes out of the video
- Retensioning- used to fix unspooled tape
- Tape Noise
My Favorite VHS
Flashdance was my favorite movie on VHS. Still is! Too bad I no longer have a VHS player, like half of the United States. Yes, I could get it on DVD, but I just don’t have the heart. I WANT TO WATCH IT ON VHS…. FOREVER!
Rest In Peace
Goodbye Video Home System. You will be forever remembered, and always in the back of our closets.
