My friend brought me here along with a non-vegan friend who was surprised and bewildered to find the sushi restaurant, in fact, had no fish. Typically at sushi restaurants, my eyes immediately dart to the cucumber roll or tofu salad – very little variety. At Cha-Ya there is a plethora of rolls, salads and other menu items with fun, different veggies like yams, banana squash and asparagus. The noodle dishes are a good, tummy-filling size and there’s no need to fear fish paste or fish products lurking amongst your soba. It’s all really quite refreshing.

Vegan Vietnamese food at its finest. The best deal is choosing one of the five or so sandwiches (I’d recommend the shredded tofu) – they’re cheap and come with free salad and the soup of the day. The soup is a toss-up, sometimes excellent like melon and sometimes not so hot like tomato and crab. The best choice for dessert is the delectable fried banana with coconut ice cream. The perfect combination of crunchy and sweet. Also check out the Thai iced tea with boba pearls. Sweet and strong, the swirled orange drink goes well with spicy tofu and tangy peanut sauces.

Today alone, I’ve had the handmade veggie burger, a excellent lentil loaf with mashed potatoes and a beautifully-sculpted chocolate cupcake. Herbivore has everything a vegan who misses more common eats could ask for – comfort foods, specialty desserts and lots of hearty appetizers. I also have been told the vegan Cesar salad with “chicken” is tasty and I can attest to its large size.

Whilst traveling aboard a train from Hungary to Romania, I had to make do with cheap snacks in the area. A tiny jar of mustard, a box of pretzels, a Nestea and a water bottle mixed with a vitamin packet.
