Twin Lakes destination visit

If you are visiting Denver and want to get away from it all, try Twin Lakes. Twin Lakes is tucked away at the bottom of Independence Pass which is one of the highest passes in the Rocky Mountains.

A great place for a walking holiday

We were lucky to find the Black Cat Bed and Breakfast on the internet. It was well positioned as a base for a great walking holiday. It is based at the bottom of Independence Pass which is closed during the winter so even more remote. Great walking along the Colorado trail, a number of fourteeners and other high mountains in the area. Also a quick drive over the pass to Aspen for lunch. The local hotel was formerly a brothel – those miners had a lot to answer for.

This is a great place to stay. It has two self-contained rooms with views right down over the Lakes and with a back drop of the Rockies and the wonderful Mount Elbert (highest fourteener in Colorado).

Willis Gulch Trail

This was a great trail from the road up to Willis Lake. Willis Lake is at around 13,500 feet. Beautiful walk up through the forest and up to open mountain side with a few rocky bits. Great wild life but not a bear in sight.

Twin Lakes

Noone knows about this place – Leadville or Buena Vista are much better known!

The track is easy to follow and in spring covered with wild flowers. This is the track back from Lake Willis towards Twin Lakes and the Willis Gulch Trail Head.

A nice day’s walking from Twin Lakes is up Willis Gulch to Lake Willis. Lots of wonderful deserted miner’s camps – a whole day’s walk and not another person on the track!

This is a good place to start some great walks. You are already at 12,500 feet and you have driven. The rest is easy! Lots of people come up here to ski – but there are no lifts in sight!

This has to be the best view in the Rockies. It is from the front verandah of the Black Cat looking towards Mount Elbert. Notice Twin Lakes right in front of you!

I don’t know this place but added it because it is one of the few attractions listed under Twin Lakes

This is near the Black Cat – can’t vouch for it but you pass it on the way to Black Cat.
